Flanked- (v) located on each side. The front porch was flanked by pots of flowers, making it look bright and welcoming.

  3. Maneuvered-(v) to move in planned, various directions The baby’s mother maneuvered skillfully around all of the toys to get to her crying child. Menace- (n) something or someone that is annoying or in some cases, dangerous. We found the menace who kept putting gum under his desk!

  4. Formidable- (adj) so powerful may cause fear. She is a formidable opponent and I need to be on the top of my game to win. Mobilized-(v) toput into motion. Once the bus was fixed, we were mobilized and heading toward school.

  5. Survey- (v) to take in a general view of a specific area. The umpires surveyed the field and decided it was too wet to play. Persistently- (adv) refusing to give up. The office kept persistently calling Ms. Ahern’s room, even though she wasn’t answering.

  6. Barrio Boy (page 523) is an excerpt from the autobiography of Ernesto (Ernie) Galarza. The excerpt from the book, Barrio Boy, depicts one of this author's experiences growing up in America as a Mexican immigrant. In this story, Ernesto is a young boy who speaks only Spanish. He enters his new American school and must learn an entirely new language. This story focuses on the feelings of the young boy and shares the challenges and victories the new Mexican American faces as he accepts his new surroundings without being made to give up his Mexican identity.
