  3. What? • Russian president and representatives of breakaway republic of Crimea and Sevastopol sign treaty, where by Crimea and Sevastopol are formally declared Federal Subjects of Russia

  4. When? • 2014 - Ongoing

  5. Why? • Vladamir Putin thinks of it as a question of legacy • Putin believes that by annexing Crime, he can undo the historical injustice of 1954, when the soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev transferred Crimea from Russia to the Ukraine. • This is a good thing.

  6. The Different Opinions • The ukrainians are angry, because the annexing will give Russia control over the military bases. • There are tens of thousands of people in Crimea, including the taters (ethnic ukrainians living in Crimea, who were fond of Ukraine), who are afraid of becoming part of Russia. • President Obama believes that Russia has “no right” to annex Crimea, and that it is illegal.
