  4. Middle School Years • Parents influences decreases and influence of peer soars! • Time with parents • Moms 20 Dads 10 • Social Competence • Group projects begin • Friends: companionship, intimacy, acceptance • Need acceptance by peers and avoid rejection

  8. Social Status • Social Status: • Accepted • Neglected • Rejected • Trust: friendships become intimate • Gender Differences: • Boys: Dominance, athletic ability, coolness and toughness • Girls: Physical appearance, family status • Queen Bees and Wannabees • Cliques: Reputation based groups

  9. Resilency as a goal • Assertiveness behaviors: I am ok/you are ok • Solving Conflicts • Grit: persistence, self-control, curiousity, consciousness, and self-confidence • Do not shield from failure, low risk mistakes/high risk mistakes
