About Presumptions • Usually based on weak grounds e.g. a single case or story or hear-say. • “I heard my friend was robbed by a black fellow, DAMN ALL IMMIGRANTS!” • Used to understand things. • ChimamandaAdichie: The danger of a single story
Teemu´s Research • Howdoes the expectations for voluntaryworkdifferfrom the reality? – An auto-ethnography of a finnishvolunteer in Thailand
Teemu´sResearch • Usingauto-ethnography I studied my diary and gatherednotesthatincludeddepiction of the worktasks I did • Then I compared the diarynotes to the expectations I hadand made twocharts. One thatshows the number of worktasksthatwere as I hadexpected. In the otherchart I showed the number of worktasksthatincludedactivitieswith the children
Teemu´sResearch • I came to conclusion that the work tasks included much more office work than working ‘in the field’ than I had expected and most of the work (74%) I did was different than I had expected. • Forty-three (out of 104) work tasks included some activities with the children according to the diary notes (41%)
Vinski´s Research • Howdoes the general population of Finland view Social Work as a profession and is it still affiliated with money distribution? • Provingthat there is a misconcpetion in the purpose of social work. • Analysingmeans to change this misconception. • By increasing the awerness of social works more important social purposes – the appreciation of the profession could be set to a more esteemed level.
Vinski´s Research • Social work is still strongly linked with money distribution, and its other more important purposes are unknown to the public. • By publicly moving income support to KELA, this misconception could start to change. • Increased appreciation of social work would boost the morale of social workers and dissipate the clienteles stigma.
Can presumptions be changed • Yes they can!
The Irrationality of Presumptions • Sometimes presumptions can be based on very weak grounds. • E.g. Superfoodand Truefinns.
How can presumptions be changed • Providing factual information on the topic via newspapers, television, radio and other medium. • Problem is to get the people to be interested about the topics. • Usually the presumptions that should be changed (e.g. racism) are the most difficult to alter. • We believe that changing fundamental presumptions takes a lot of time, but can be achieved.
What benefits could presumption changing offer? • For example: in social work it can increase the public appreciation. • In voluntary work: Therecouldbemorevolunteers and the onesthinking of volunteeringcouldfind the courage to volunteer. The volunteerswouldknowwhat to expect and thatwould help them to orientate for the jobbeforeactuallyworking
