  1. Chapter 11 Tides

  2. Chapter Outline • 11.1: Tides are the longest ocean waves • 11.2: Tides are formed by gravity and inertia • 11.3: Dynamic Theory of Tides • 11.6: Power can be generated from tides

  3. Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation

  4. Tide Theories • Equilibrium theory of tides • Newton’s Model • Does not include factors that can affect tides • Dynamic theory of tides • Laplace’s Model • Takes into account many factors that can affect the tides

  5. Earth’s Orbit

  6. Earth-Moon System

  7. Inertia + Gravity = Tidal Bulges

  8. Tidal Bulges- Earth Spins beneath the bulges

  9. Lunar Day vs. Solar Day

  10. Tidal Bulges follow the Moon

  11. The Sun’s Impact on Tides

  12. Neap and Spring Tides

  13. Types of Tides

  14. Tidal Patterns • Tidal Range: difference between high water and low water. • Tidal Bore: true tidal wave caused by the flood current moving up the mouth of a river. • Tidal Current: water flowing into and out of bays and harbors, changing sea level • Flood Current: water rushing into an enclosed area due to high tide. • Ebb Current: water rushing out of an enclosed area due to low tide. • Slack Water: a time of no currents, occurs at peak of high tide and valley of low tide.
