  1. Making Time for Research Dragomir Cosanici Ruth Lilly Law Library Indiana University-Indianapolis School of Law

  2. Outline • Selection of Topic(s) • Identification of Funding Sources • Timing of Research and Writing • Shopping for Publication • Conclusion

  3. Selection of Topic • Why is the research important? • Who will benefit from my publication? • Is the topic preempted? (Already written about enough so that I will just crowd the field with the publication)

  4. Selection of Topic(s) • Relate the topic to your specific area of academic librarianship, information policy or pedagogy of research • When selecting a topic, think about who potential evaluators may be • Under the standards of many schools, it is important to select a topic of importance to the field and present an original idea or argument • Be true to yourself

  5. Identification of Funding Sources • Role of funding sources • It will often tell you if someone else is working on the same project • Dossier builder • Provides the potential place of publication w/a measure of worthiness • Additional motivation • Examples: InULA Research Grant, AALL, SLA

  6. Sample Funding Sources

  7. Featured Grants InULA Grant: http://www.iu.edu/~inula/opportunities/rif/rifguide.html American Association of Law Libraries Research: http://www.aallnet.org/about/grant_application.asp Special Libraries Association: http://www.sla.org/content/learn/scholarship/goldspiel/appmat.cfm

  8. Timing of Research and Writing Set a deadline for completing different parts of the project Complete the research project in your offseason Hire a student or collaborate in some way with a colleague Do not overspend your time or funding on one area of the research at the expense of another Guard against research dead-ends

  9. Shopping Your Research and Publication Efficiently answer to proposed editor: a) why is the research important and b) who will benefit from it? Aim high, include international journals Online publications and peer review Don’t expect your first version to be your last Good editors demand more
