  2. Purpose of the Course • For each internship credit a student sets measurable career performance and learning objectives that go beyond the present scope of his/her job. The student then works to accomplish those objectives during the semester.

Who should take Internship • CS 481R –CS Majors (matriculated) • CS 281R - AAS in Programming • DGM 281R – DGM majors • DGM 481R – DGM (matriculated) • EGDT 281R – Drafting students (second year) • TECH 481R – Tech mgmt majors(matriculated) • SURV 481R – Geomatics majors (matriculated) • APPR 281R- Apprenticeship majors

  4. Work Hours Requirement • The Formula: For every 75 hours of employment in a semester a student may earn 1 credit hour of co-op/internship. • 2 credit (150 hour)/semester minimum • A student who works 10 hours a week for 15 weeks is eligible for 2 credits. Students who work more hours may earn more credit. • Departments have separate requirements

  5. Course Requirements • Students may take Internships over more than one semester but may not accrue more than a total of 16 hours over the course of their college career. • Internship credit may not be earned or awarded retroactively. • The student will receive a CR designation on his/her transcript. No letter grades are given.

  9. Student Check List • Provides week to week instructions regarding tasks • Notifies when objectives, midterm, final evaluation and final written report are due

  10. Student Information Sheet • Provides student information regarding • major • personal contact information • place of employment • Verifies employment contact information • supervisor name and title

  12. How to Write Objectives • What are objectives? • Objectives are goals. They are targets to be reached. Successful professionals constantly create goals and work toward them. Internship students are required to set their own targets; what they want to achieve.

  13. Objectives must: • Be an expansion of your Project Proposal. • Combine academic knowledge with workplace environment. • Be achievable by Monday of the week before finals. • Be reasonable within your work place and have your employer’s approval.

  14. Objectives must: • Be measurable. • Be verifiable by a rational, performance, or data-based method, such as: increasing sales by 20 percent, having a 100 percent safety record for 3 months, or completing the 30 hour management training program. • Specify a completion date.

  15. HOW MANY OBJECTIVES? • Start with one objective per credit • Range should be credit number to 2 more than credit number • For example, a 3 credit class should have 3-5 objectives • Number is based on what makes sense, as decided by you and your supervisor

  17. Bad Example I will improve at SQL. To accomplish the objective I will: 1) Complete my current database course. 2) Finish “Teach Yourself SQL”. 3) Attend the SQL conference. 4) Participate in workshops. I will have accomplished the objective when I feel comfortable writing scripts. Date for completion: End of the semester

  18. Good Example I will improve my ability to use the SQL database query language. To accomplish the objective I will: 1) Complete online course in SQL. 2) Finish the last 8 chapters of Teach Yourself SQL. 3) Attend all 3 days of the SQL conference. 4) Participate in at least 5 hours of workshops at the SQL conference. I will have accomplished the objective when I have written at least 3 scripts/queries for my employer on the Performance database and when they are approved by him. Date for completion: February 1,

  19. Student /Employer Mid-term Evaluation Directions: briefly relate progress on each objective. Indicate any concerns or alternations in original goal. Submit before end of mid-term week.   21. Job Site Visit • You may be asked to help facilitate a visit to your job site. Due to work load and time constraints, the Internship Manager may opt to conduct the job site visit by phone.

  22. Internship Term Paper Requirements • Minimum of 2 pages OR 1page per credit, whichever is GREATER, 12 font size, APA format (double-spaced, cover page, grammatically correct), professional report which includes the following: • Additional duties and responsibilities if added during the internship • The objectives and expectations of the organization with regard to the internship. • The competencies completed during the internship and the extent to which they were achieved.

  23. Internship Term Paper Requirements (cont.) • A brief summary of what was learned from each proposal (objective). • An assessment of how this internship helped you become better prepared for your chosen career. • Work supervisor must sign off on final written report before submission.

  24. End of Course Survey • Will be sent to you near the end of the semester • Type in answers and email back to me

  25. SCHOLARSHIPS • Online application • Must be non-paid internship • Deadline 12 September 2013

  26. Who’s Responsible? • The student is the guiding force in this project. • You need to do all of the paperwork and insure your supervisor completes the necessary forms • Credit is based on whether you complete all of the requirements. • Failure to submit required information on time may be cause for failure of the course • All deliverables must be typed. Those requiring signatures, must have them.
