Autobiography • From Emmons, MN. • Attended and graduated from Glenville-Emmons Schools • High School Extra Curricular included: Baseball, Basketball, Target, FFA, Spanish Club. • I worked on a Dairy Farm and for a Lawn & Garden business. • Attended College at Alexandria Technical College. While at college I worked at a gas station and dairy farm.

  3. After College • Started for Mapleton Police Department September 17, 2001. • Promoted to Chief on May 5, 2006. • Married, wife’s name is Amber. • Two Dogs. Choc. Lab (Kali) and a German Wirehaired Pointer (Hugo) • Son named Landon (6 years old in March). • Daughter names Makaylah (19 months) • Hobbies: spending time with family, hunting, fishing, riding atv, training my dogs, many other things.

Becoming a Police Officer • Minnesota requirements: • 2 year degree • Transfer from another state where you would be certified in LE • Must pass state written test • Hired by a police agency to activate your police license, and you must meet these qualifications: • Pass a Medical Examination • Pass a Psychological Examination • Pass a Physical Agility Test (College physical training can be good enough) • Fingerprints must be sent to BCA and FBI • Must pass a thorough background

  7. Police Training • Mandatory • Use of Force/Deadly Force (yearly) • Firearms Qualifications (yearly) • Defensive Tactics (yearly) • Pursuit Driving (once every 5 years) • We attend other training as funds allow. • We train with other departments to save funds.

  9. 2012 MN Crime Statistics • 24,829 burglaries • 102,154 Thefts • 8,251 Motor Vehicle Thefts • 138,476 Adult Arrests • 32,756 Juvenile Arrests • 41% of all arrests are people ages 15-24 • 92 Murders (That’s 2 murders for every 100,000 people) • 40% of Murders a firearms was involved • 70% of Murders are killed by family or someone they know. • MAPLETON PD had a total of 47 arrests. • 12 juveniles and 35 adults.

  10. 2012 MN Crash Facts • 395 people died on MN Roadways • Estimated economic cost to Minnesota: $1,513,639,100 • On an average day in 2012: - 189 crashes - 1 death and 80 injuries • Average daily cost: $4,135,626 • 2012 crashes that were known to be alcohol-related: - 3,837 crashes - 131 deaths and 2,644 injuries - Estimated economic cost: $262,906,600

Mapleton PD Community Policing • Public Speaking to Community Groups * Students * Non profit groups (Sertoma, girl scouts, cub scouts) • Being seen in the community *General Patrol (driving all streets including dead end streets) • Working with Fire Department • Working with Schools (Mock Crash, Rollover Simulator, parking cars at football games) • Checking business doors during late night hours. • DARE • TZD Grant TZD=Towards Zero Deaths (Formally Safe & Sober) • School Liaison officer at Maple River High/Middle School

MPCI- Mapleton Police Community Involvement • Presence at Maple River Schools • Presence at Daycares within city • Goal is to stop at the Child Care Center once a month and read a book or participate in activity • Presence at the Mapleton Community Home • Goal is to participate in an activity each month. • Currently working on a house watch program for when citizens go on vacation. • May add more activities in the future.

  15. College Safety Tips • Things to Consider • Walk in pairs or groups. (Especially in night or low light) • Don’t go to places that your not familiar with. (Especially in night or low light) • Be Responsible if you choose to consume alcohol. • Be aware of date rape drugs and how to help prevent being exposed to them. • If you are uncomfortable about going somewhere or doing something, chances are good your gut feeling is right.
