Mission The mission of the QOL Council is a simple one: take the most serious problems affecting the Quality of Life in Broward County, bring the best minds of NSU’s faculty, students, and community providers to bear, and the results will be a better quality of life for Broward County.
HIGHLIGHTS In its 7 year history, 18 Awards, to over 50 Faculty, $170,000 + $10,000 per Award, community, donations, and NSU Quality of Life Council http://qol.nova.edu Similar to President’s Grants, graduate students can apply, must be collaboration with community agency

FUNDING Funds have been targeted to support faculty scholarship in applied research to improve the Quality of Life in Broward County The University and the CCB’s commitment is to expand NSU’s QOL programs in community based research

QOL Proposal Not to exceed 15 pages Community partner must be evident Collaboration with other academic units across NSU Addresses an important local problem Study is based on an established, fully referenced body of knowledge If the study’s aims are achieved how will they benefit Broward County residents

Eligibility • All full-time NSU faculty and research scientists • Part-time faculty and students are encouraged be involved in submissions, but cannot submit as principal investigators • Can be a reviewer or panel chair and also submit • Can apply if submitted in the past • If awarded for FY2010, active past PFRDG awards will be reviewed to see if the award should be continued into FY2010 • Cannot submit to both PFRDG and QOL
Application Procedures • One copy submitted electronically to PFRDG10@nova.edu submitted by the deadline, containing three files, attached to the email: • Application Face Page in Microsoft Word • Title Page in Microsoft Word • Application Form in Microsoft Word • One paper copy submitted (with the three forms and the Dean’s Commitment Form) by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2009 to OGC in University Park Plaza North, 2nd floor • Do not include electronic version with paper copy submitted to OGC • Maximum funding (including required match) is $10,000
PROPOSAL FORMAT • All forms (Application Face Page, Title Page, Application Form) are located at www.nova.edu/pfrdg, they are Microsoft Word fill-in forms • Title Page: the title cannot exceed 81 characters and the abstract cannot exceed 300 words • Application Form: Narrative must not exceed 6 single spaced pages and the References, Appendices, CVs are not part of the 6 page limit • Collaborative Projects: only a maximum of 5 points allowed for collaboration at the discretion of the review panel • Dean’s Commitment Form: only included with the paper application, available at www.nova.edu/pfrdg • Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Health Professions Division (HPD) Research Committee Review: not required for submission but faculty should review when writing the proposal
Dean’s Commitment Form • Only included with paper copy of the proposal • All faculty/research scientists participating in the collaboration must receive commitment from their dean • Approval and support for proposed work • Commitment to the indicated match • Commitment to all other resources necessary to carry out the project
Academic Unit Dollar Match • Required exact dollar match by one or a combination of academic units • All academic units involved must have the Dean’s Commitment Form signed, even if not providing dollar or resource support • All other resources must be committed by the deans (for example, space, equipment, etc.) • Must not diminish existing resources for faculty support
Eligible for Funding • Work Study assistance • Other temporary employee assistance • Equipment to be university property • Instruments, including test materials or other specialized materials • Incentive to pay human subjects • Special promotional activities • Travel: consultations/collaborations, formal presentation of scholarly work in professional venues, to collect data
Ineligible for Funding • Faculty development travel • Faculty release time • Payment of regular full-time or part-time employees or enhancement of full-time or part-time faculty (students are compensated through student employment)
Review Process • Pre-Screening Proposal Checklist, proposal returned by March 27, 2009 if not in compliance • If applicant wishes to have his/her proposal pre-screened before the deadline, must submit the full proposal 24 hours in advance of the deadline • Review panel and chair (full-time faculty) • Collaborative • Nominated by deans and VP-RTT • Proposal Rating Form, panel chairs submit scores to OGC by April 24, 2009 • OGC tabulates scores and submits to VP-RTT • VP-RTT presents highest ranked proposals to the president • President selects winners by May 1, 2009 • Notification letters to all faculty participants with final scores by May 6, 2009
Post-Award Procedures • June 1, 2009: Earliest date awards can begin and projects run until June 30, 2010 • An extension (No-Cost Extension Form), at the discretion of the VP-RTT, can be awarded if the request is received by April 30, 2010 • Extensions beyond June 30, 2011 will not be allowed • Extensions will not confer any additional funds above and beyond the original award amount • No funds will be released until: • IRB and HPD Research Committee approvals are met (if applicable) • Meet with Dr. Margules (VP-RTT) and respond to reviewer’s comments • The PI familiarize themselves of the post-award procedures including the Rebudgeting Request Form and contact OGC to finalize project budget • A final report must be submitted to Dr. Margules (VP-RTT) 90 days after the project end date
Creating a Budget • Income/Expense Codes provided by Financial Operations should be used when preparing the budget (www.nova.edu/cwis/fop/budget.codes) • If awarded: All requests for expenditures must be submitted to the OGC for review for allocability and allowability • Must contain Principal Investigator/Project Director approval signature
