WORKSHOPS • THE RIGHT FIT- presented by Karen Friesen L103 • An overview of college systems. Explore different types of plans for after high school and create a balanced college list using Naviance tools! • PREPARING FOR COLLEGE- presented by Valerie Martin L125 • Covering specific UC & CSU high school course completion requirements for admission (A-G). Review timeline for college preparation including SAT/ACT test recommendations. • COMMUNITY COLLEGE- presented by Carrie Bennett L121 • Learn about entrance requirements & opportunities offered through CA Community Colleges. • AFFORDING COLLEGE- presented by Adrianna Dooner L107 • Get more information about college costs and affording college through the completion of the FAFSA (Federal Aid Application) and scholarships.

TIMELINE FOR COLLEGE Detailed timeline available on the handout. Here are a few highlights... • Focus on GPA in 10th and 11th Grade • Take the SAT or ACT spring of junior year • Build a college list summer after junior year • Apply for 4-year colleges fall of senior year • Apply for scholarships throughout senior year • Complete the FAFSA to be eligible to receive financial aid fall of senior year
HOW COUNSELORS HELP • Annual guidance on course selection & eligibility requirements • Status letters mailed home to juniors (spring) and seniors (fall) • Individual meetings with every junior and senior to discuss goals and next steps • Informational nights for students and parents, college application labs, scholarship advertising, reminder emails, help with questions • Write letters of recommendation if needed • Submit any records requested by students to colleges and universities
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES • Maintain a strong GPA • Take advantage of informational sessions, application help, etc. • Develop a well-curated college list • Complete college applications, • Complete FAFSA, and search for and apply for scholarships if desired • Meet all deadlines • Register online with NCAA if student athlete: www.eligibilitycenter.org • COMMUNICATE with your counselor! • Request any documentation needed from MHHS at least 3 business weeks in advance • Inform counselors of college goals and plans, NCAA plans • Update counselors when you are accepted!!!
