Common Soldiers The main type of weapon used in the Renaissance in war was the long sword and a great sword. Various pole arms were used as well as maces to break through armor. The armor of the common soldiers usually was composed of mail or chain mail. Plate armor was also worn but only the rich and strong could wear it.
War Officers • Usually rode on horseback to command the soldiers and would sometimes wear armor to protect themselves. The armor was sometimes decorated depending on the person. • They had a short to medium length long sword, which sometimes was decorated.
Knights The usually knight armor usually included full plate mail and heavy equipment, although it was fatiguing. The armor alone could weigh about 100 pounds. The only people who wore plate were mostly the nobles because they could afford it. The weapons the knights used mostly included long swords and lances in battle or jousting.
