  2. Vision of Nypunyam To create large numbers of ready-to-employ skilled personnel with very high Employability Quotient (EPQ) linked to placements.

  3. The Objectives of Nypunyam Contributing to an exponential increase in skilled personnel linked to assured placements Through Centres of Excellence Industrial Tie-Ups and Other feasible and viable Skill Development Models

  4. The 3rd Route CoEs and ITUPs are the core of Nypunyam. This Presentation will focus on the 3rd Route On Encouraging Alternate Feasible and Viable Skill Development Models

  5. Encouraging Innovations in Skills Development • Nypunyam would like to Encourage Innovations in Skills Development • Kerala has Innovators. But their focus is not on innovations in the area of Skills Development • NRKs with highly innovative ideas who can reach the goals of Nypunyam through host of different innovative skill development models.

  6. Presenting Some possible ideas, innovators, models for Skills Development

  7. 1. Thinking Beyond Government • Encouraging Private Entrepreneurship in Skill Development. • Private players are encouraged to set up Skill Development Centres beyond Government ITIs using private land, capital, ideas and infrastructure.

  8. 2. Think Vertical • When we think of Skills Training Centres and Educational Institutions, we think of land. We think we need large tracts of land to set up a new Skills Development Institute or an ITI. • Actually we don’t • But land continues to be Mental Block for us.

  9. 2. Thinking Vertical • Land is scarce. We need to think vertical. • Until 15 years ago we would not stay on the 1st floor of a two storied house. • Now stay on 35th and 40th floors. • Nothing will prevent our students learning skills in classrooms that are on the 7th floor or 8th or 10th floors. • Skill training classrooms can be in high-rises. • Horizontally built ITIs are to be replaced with Vertical ITIs. • Innovative Private Players can show Kerala the way.

Skills Development for the Physically Challenged • Physically challenged people are one area that we ignore when talking of skills development. • They are not only possibly a highly productive skilled workforce, but can be extremely useful in certain skills. • For the visually/physically Challenged.

  11. 3. Skills Development for the Physically Challenged Rare instances of work already being done by NRKs - Alpha Palliative Clinic and its Chairman Sri. K M Noordeen

  12. 4. Skills Development for the Mentally Challenged • Important Gap area. • Not much work done. • Kerala and India need to Innovate. • Perhaps NSDC and NSDA need to focus.

  13. 5. Soft Skills Development • Soft skills is the Malayali’s weakness. • Language skills are atrocious. • Communication skills are weak. • Leads to lack of confidence in the best skilled students.

Developing Soft Skills • Soft skills development is essential. • Languages: English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese. • Good beginning by the Directorate of Employment and Training through its Employability Centres. • Expand areas where soft skills training can be given. • Private Players can play a significant and innovative role.

  15. 6. Alternatives Approaches to Soft Skills Teaching • Optimal utilization of buildings and infrastructure already available. • Using Government and Private Colleges Class-rooms during free hours, in the evenings etc.

Reviving Ancient and Traditional Skills • Need to look back into the future. • Need to revive traditional skills that are dying for want of encouragement. • Nypunyam is an Occasion to begin to encourage such revival of ancient and traditional skills. • Innovators in Kerala and beyond should look at the possibility of reviving these dying skills.

  17. 7. Reviving Ancient and Traditional Skills • Handloom Weaving • The AranmulaKannadi, the Aranmula Mirror.

  18. 8. Massively Open On-line CoursesMOOCs • ITIs already have courses that are taught over the internet. • But they are not yet either massive or open. • Need to develop MOOCs for Skills Training.

  19. 8. MOOCs: Massively Open On-line Courses • Innovators in this area need to be encouraged. • Tie up with start ups, Techno-parks etc. for starting such MOOC courses.

Creating Entrepreneurs Out of our Skilled Young People • Our ITI certificate holders, need not only be mere employees. • They can become entrepreneurs themselves and give job to thousand others. • Skills and Entrepreneurship should be encouraged to go hand in hand. • There are institutions already working in the area of EDP training for the skilled.

  21. 9. Creating Entrepreneurs Out of our Skilled Young People • I CREATE is an organization which has been doing work on EDP for the Skilled. • They have been working in Kerala along with AMMACHI, a wing of the Mata Amrathanandamayi’s Organization in Amritapuri.

  22. 10. Future Growth Sectors • We should be looking at future growth areas that require skilled manpower. • Niche areas and future growth sectors should be encouraged. • Kerala has the HR potential to provide skilled HR in such Niche Areas.

  23. 10. Future Niche Areas • 3 D Manufacture is one such. • 3 G and 3.5 G are passé. • 4 G is in Fibre Optics: May require over 50,000 skilled workforce. (BalaIyer from Reliance Telecom will be making a presentation on this at the first session tomorrow)

  24. 11. Very Large Multi-Skills Training Centres • One of the suggestions made by Dr. UdayBalakrishnanin the Expert Committee on Employment and Skills set up by the Kerala State Planning Board was to set up VLMSTCs. • Economy of Size • Central location where very large numbers of students can be skilled in a large variety of Skills. • Could even be in our backward districts, Idukki, Wayanad etc.

  25. 12. Changing Our Attitude towards Skilled Work • Casteist attitude to work. • Social Prejudice against skilled work. • Blue Collar jobs Vs White Collar jobs. • No dignity for skilled work. • The PM’s Scheme will get undone merely because of social prejudice.

Required: A Massive Social Campaign to Change Public Psyche • Needed: Massive social campaign to change public psyche towards skilled work. • The Government, Public Enterprises, the State Planning Board and other Private Agencies or all together should take the lead in launching a massive public campaign to change perceptions towards skilled work.

  27. 12. Massive Social Campaign Needed • NSDC and NSDA has a special responsibility . • NSDC and NSDA should start a massive audio visual, web based, mobile based, TV, Film, Radio, Print, hoarding based Social Campaign. • Young minds should think of a career in skills as much as they would think of a career in the IAS, or as an Engineer or Doctor.
