Question Who are better estimators, males or females?
PURPOSE The purpose of this project is to determine who is better at estimating the unknown, males or females. This is important because when you need help you want to go to the person who is better.
Hypothesis We hypothesize that females will be better at estimating. We believe this because they are good at math and school.
Materials 1. Jar 2. Kit Kats 3. Crayons 4. Paper Clips 5. Bracelets 6. Rubber Bands
Variables Manipulated: males and females Responding: estimates Constant: jar and the same amount of things in the jar for each trial
Directions Put Kit Kats in the jar. Record how many kit Kats in the jar. 3. Ask males and females estimate the number of Kit Kats they think are in the jar. 4. Repeat steps 1-3 with rubber bands. 5. Repeat 1-3 with paper clips. 6. Repeat 1-3 with pencils.
Directions 7. Repeat 1-3 with crayons. 8. For each trial, calculate the average estimate. 9. For each trial, calculate the average difference between actual and average estimate.
Conclusion Our hypotheses was incorrect. Males are better at estimating. The average difference between the actual and the estimate for males was 93.24. The average difference between the actual and the estimate for the females was 129.94. It would be interesting to see if males were better at estimating other things such as height and distance.
