  1. How did the civil rights movement develop between 1955 and 1963?

  2. All that you learn in the next batch of lessons will be essential information for the first coursework question: “How much impact did Martin Luther King have in changing civil rights for black Americans?”

Between 1955 and 1963 there were 6 key civil rights campaigns… • Some involved Martin Luther King, but others didn’t. • Some changed civil rights for black Americans more than others. • The 6 campaigns were: • The Montgomery Bus Boycott 1955-6 • The SCLC, 1957 Civil Rights Act & the Greensboro sit-in 1960 • The Freedom Rides 1961 • The Voter Education Project 1962 • The Birmingham March 1963 • The Washington March 1963 • You need to know about all of them. • You are going to start by becoming an expert on one of them. Then you are going to use your expertise to teach others about that campaign. By teaching each other (‘peer teaching’), you’ll get to know about all 6 campaigns.

Activity • You have: • An info sheet about one of the civil rights campaigns which took place between 1955-63 • An images sheet (or two) for your campaign • Two sheets of A3 (if you want to sellotape them together that’s fine!) • What to do: • You have 2-3 lessons to make a poster out of the information you have been given. • It’s hugely important that all of the info on your info sheet makes it onto your poster – because you will be using your poster to teach others about your campaign • A good poster will….. • Not be too text-heavy • Will balance images and drawings with text • Be colourful • Have subheadings – so that the information is broken down into chunks • You should…. • Use the subheadings on the info sheet to structure your poster • Cut and stick the images & captions from the image sheet(s) onto your poster • Make your own poster, but work together in your team to share ideas/help each other understand the information
