  3. The Youth Justice system What was done wrong in the Venebles and Thompson case? The child defendants should have been tried in a youth court which means a less intrusive environment with no access to the public or the media. The children’s names were officially released to the media after the trail and were already in the media during the trial. This should not happen with under 18’s. Many aspects of the case were aired in the media before and during the trial which meant a Fair trail did not take place. The children were not given a defence eg no evidence of home background aired in court. The children were given a minimum fixed sentence which is not supposed to happen with child offenders.
