TAKS Question • Why is it that you take five days to work on essay in class and complain that you need more time and on the day of TAKS you take forty-five minutes to do all of the steps?
Essay- before lunch • 9:30 ish- Begin test • Pre-write – Rewrite prompt Circle Map Tree Map Flow Map/Flee Map (should take between 30 – 45 minutes)
Essay • 10:15 – Rough Draft • Work on rough draft – remember to leave some space between your lines to do revision and editing later. • Remember to stop several times during your writing and re-read your prompt. Are you still addressing the prompt? Is the reader going to see a clear connection to the prompt? If not, do you need to make a change in your story line? • This should take about a hour /hour and a half
Essay • 11:15 – Revision/Editing (take about 45 minutes- one hour) • During this time make use of your dictionary! • Remember our steps for editing – check capitalization (at the beginning of the sentence and any other places required) and end punctuation, • Check each sentence for subject/verb agreement, for fragments and run-on sentences, verb tense agreement
Essay - Check correct pronouns and see if they agree with their antecedents - Use apostrophes correctly –contractions or possessive - Check for those troublesome words – their, there, they’re, were, where, etc. - Check other punctuation – commas, semi-colons, colons, etc. used correctly. If you forgot the rules, check the dictionary! - Check spelling!!! Read your paper backwards!
Essay • Recheck your introduction – do you grab the reader? Do you give them a little background information? Do you give them a hint of what is coming? • Recheck your conclusion – did you bring your story to a conclusion? Can the reader tell what your “so what” is?
Objective – after lunch • Read the passage through first! • Record the verb tense for each paragraph in the margin • Record at the top of the passage how it was written – first person (pronouns- I, me, we) or third person (he, she , they ) • Highlight important information in the questions – task and location
Objective • Return to the passage and revisit the identified statements. Try all answer suggestions. Record “why” they do or do not work. • Identify the correct answer and power line your answer. • After you have finished the test, re-work it to double check your answers.
Final Draft Essay • Begin re-writing you rough draft • Remember to take your time and do your best handwriting. • After you finish your final draft, make sure that you re-read your essay. Look for mistakes- missing words, repeated words, etc.
Objective • Fill in your scantron • Make sure you erase cleanly • Check your answers every 5 to 6 questions to make sure that you did not get off. • After you have finish, recheck your scantron to your booklet
