RELATIONSHIP WITH THE ROMANOVS • November 1905 Nicholas’ diary records the meeting of a Father Grigori and his help in stopping Alexis’ bleeding • Influence on Alexandra grew, seen as the only person who could prolong Alexis’ life • His scandalous behaviour was ignored • Held no formal position in government but had influence on government appointments • Influence grew after assassination of Stolypin, advised Alexandra when Nicholas left for war

HELPED TO DISCREDIT THE TSAR • Boasted of his influence (which was probably less than his contemporaries believed it to be) • Considerable influence on Alexandra • Partly responsible for poor appointments after 1915 • Suggested his murder was the first step to revolution because it showed respect for the Tsar’s wishes had disappeared

  8. DEATH • Poisoned, shot and then eventually drowned by disgruntled aristocrats in December 1916 • Body buried at royal residence at Tsarkoe Selo • 1917 body disinterred and burnt • Details about his murder are confusing and contradictory
