Rerum Novarum The Rights and Duties of Labor
Theme • Like Marx’s Communist Manifesto, Rerum Novarum: • Criticized the abuses of Liberal Capitalism in which the worker was valued for what he could produce and for who he was. • Called for all workers to be treated better than slaves and that their dignity be restored. • Unlike the Communist Manifesto: • It opposed the idea that workers take over with the elimination of private property, religion, and government.
Alternative Solution: • The life of Christ as seen through the Gospels and the traditions of the Church were to be the model for change for the establishment instead of socialism. • The following of Natural Law was to be the focal point. (The God-given need for creation including human beings, to follow what God intended it to be.)
Six Points of Rerum Novarum: • Cooperation Between Classes (Rights and duties for both capitalists and workers) • The Dignity of Work(Work’s primary purpose is to provide for a decent life. The worker does not exist for the sake of the job.) • Just Wage and Unions(Pay to have a decent life & the right to organize for better conditions) • The Role of the State(Balance... Gov. should watch over people and only interfere when necessary.) • Private Ownership of Property(Distribution of property fairly for the advancement of people.) • Defense of the Poor(The protection and needs of the poor are given a priority)
The Reaction: • Gives general guidelines on how society can be more just. However, the enforcement of it rests on the interpretation of the document by the people. • Did help change working conditions throughout sections of Europe both for individuals and within factories. • Did change the focus of the Church from the aristocracies to common man. (French Revolution and Rerum Novarum combined.)
