Permission to enter changeroom/gym/equipment rooms • Changing time: 3-5 minutes • P.E. uniform • Athletic black bottoms, white t-shirt, and running shoes • Hair ties for long hair • Personal belongings • Evaluation each day includes set-up and take down of the equipment
Safety/Equipment • Equipment rooms are restricted • Washroom & drink breaks • No food, drink or gum allowed in the gym
Forgotten P.E. uniform that day • One day short term illness • Chronic, long term, continuing illness or injury
Getting Marks in P.E. Application – 42% • Physical participation • Readiness to participate • Group interaction • Independence • Effort • This is a daily mark out of 10
Getting Marks in P.E. Knowledge – 10.5% • Tests • Quizzes • Assignments * This is marked throughout the semester
Getting Marks in P.E. Thinking & Inquiry – 7% • Takes responsibility • Shows initiative • Fair play & activity etiquette • Challenges abilities • Uses equipment properly * This is marked once at the end of each week
Getting Marks in P.E. Communication – 10.5% • Listens to & follows instructions • Appropriate social interaction • Cooperation • Self-expression • Respect & support for others • This is marked at the end of each week
Final 35% • Portfolio – 8% • Summative Evaluation - 10% • Final Written Exam – 12% • Final Fitness Testing – 5%
Rock Climbing • Students will have an opportunity to participate in Rock Climbing. • The Rock Climbing Unit will be here at Westminster. • The Rock Climbing Unit will be five days long. • The dates will be Monday April 8th to Friday April 12th.

Workouts will be logged daily • Portfolios will be collected throughout the semester to be marked – please keep them up to date • This is 8% of your mark do not lose them! • Workouts/handouts in class will be added to your portfolio • Health notes should be kept separately

5 Components of Fitness • Cardiovascular Endurance – the ability of the lungs, heart, and blood vessels to deliver adequate amounts of oxygen and nutrients to the cells and to remove waste products • The Beep Test • Harvard Step Test • Cooper 2.4 km Run • FIT Interval Test
Muscular Endurance – the ability of the muscle to perform repeated or sustained contractions over a period of time • Sit-ups and push-ups • Bench Press Beep test • Wall sit • Muscular Strength – the maximum tension or force a muscle can exert in a single contraction • Bench press and leg press • Grip Strength
Flexibility – the ability of a joint to move freely through its full range of motion • Stand & reach, shoulder extension, calf extension • Body Composition – a term used to refer to a person’s fat mass to lean body mass
Subcomponents of Fitness • Power – is a combination of strength and speed. How strong and fast a contraction is. • Standing long jump, standing vertical jump, kneeling basketball throw • Agility – the ability to move quickly and easily both forward and backward and laterally • 9 meter maze run, 3 Cone shuttle drill 3. Coordination/Balance – • stork test, tennis ball wall test, plate tapping test
Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines From the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology Youth (12-17 yrs): For health benefits, youth aged 12-17 years should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity of physical activity daily
This should include: • Vigorous intensity activities at least 3 days per week • Activities that strengthen muscle and bone at least 3 days per week More daily physical activity provides greater health benefits
