Goal: Design an architecturally appealing building-integrated wind energy generation system while enabling new product growth while advocating clean energy production. http://www.quietrevolution.co.uk/qr5.htm
Trade Studies / Survey Data • The Empire State building is receiving $20 million dollars in wind integrating technology to save 10% electricity. • Mayor Bloomberg of New York City plans to incorporate wind energy into the NYC skyline in the hopes of being able to generate 10% of the city’s electricity needs within 10 years. http://www.city-data.com/forum/city-vs-city/82100-chicago-new-york-city-9.html http://www.pandavacations.ca/images/NorthAmerica/NYC-EmpireStateBuilding.gif

Location: Chicago was chosen because it has an average wind speed of 10-15 mph, which is higher than the national average. http://pics2.city-data.com/w4/wnd5876.png http://www.kenclark.com/images/US_chicago.gif
Building choice: The Trump Tower accelerates the wind, is very tall, architecturally appealing, and is still under construction. http://www.som.com/resources/category/5/0/6/7/3/1/images/001_21581688.jpg http://www.chicagotribune.com/chi-trump-flash,0,5657511.flash

Prototype Cad Drawing
Power Output • This Turbine Produces 10,000 kWh/yr. • @ wind speeds of 5mph • According to http://www.ecogeek.org/content/view/219/ • The average wind spend in Chicago is 10-15 mph • The Trump tower accelerates the wind, making the average wind speed about 12.5 mph. • 12.5 mph/5 mph = 2.5 times the power* • *assumption • 10,000 kWh/yr. x 2.5 = 25,000 kWh/yr. • Wind speeds at 12.5mph = 25,000 kWh/yr.
Costing of Project *The Cost of Controls for all four wind turbines was 1.5 times the unit price, due to the fact that as more wind turbines are added the cost of controls is reduced.
Return on Investment Cost of Turbine = $37,271.75 Installation Cost = $6,711.93 Mast = $4,474.85 Cost of Controls = $2,572.91 per turbine Total Cost = $51,031.44 Turbine Produces 25,000 kWh/yr. Cost of Electricity in Chicago as of December 2008 = $0.14 .14/kWh x 25,000kWh/yr. = $3,500 in savings ROI = $51,031.61/$3,500 • = 14.6 years to break even for all 4 turbines
The addition of wind turbines to the Trump Tower will save money and energy while serving as a model for high rise buildings everywhere. http://arcilook.com/wp-content/uploads/010_qr_ground_mounted_01.jpg
