  2. What is Assistive Technology? Specialized products that level the playing field by overcoming an impairment or deficit to make it possible to be successful and independent.

  3. Assistive Technology Act of 1998 Public Law 105-394 [29 USC 2201] The Assistive Technology Act, also known as the “Tech Act” provides funds to states to support three types of programs. • The establishment of assistive technology (AT) demonstration centers, information centers, equipment loan facilities, referral services, and other consumer-oriented programs. • Protection and advocacy services to help people with disabilities and their families, as they attempt to access the services for which they are eligible. • Federal/state programs to provide low interest loans and other alternative financing options to help people with disabilities purchase needed assistive technology.

  4. Alabama’s Assistive Technology Resource, STAR Alabama’s Assistive Technology Act program, is administered through the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services and is federally funded by the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) under the Assistive Technology Act of 1998, as amended in 2004 (P.L. 108-364).

  5. STAR has a 16-year history of established relationships and partnerships with public and private entities within the state to address AT-related issues and ensure statewide coverage. STAR staff participate on boards, advisory councils, workgroups, committees, etc., that address the needs of Alabamians with disabilities across a life span to increase the availability of assistive technology for the consumers they serve.

  6. Hearing Impaired The VV-Talker is an electronic device designed specifically for those hearing impaired children. VV-Talker helps such children overcome their difficulty in speaking effectively. Children who find it daunting to learn faster can use this device, which makes the process of learning faster and accurate.

  7. Seeing Impaired The FingerReader, sits like a ring on a user’s finger and scans words via a built-in camera as the user points to them. Software identifies the words and translates them into an audio track. The FingerReader also alerts users if their finger veers away from a line of text.

  8. Learning Disabled This hand held reading aid helps students learn to pronounce and understand the meaning of new words. This product could be used by students with learning disabilities as well as by people without disabilities.

  9. Physically Disabled An organization called Let’s Play is helping kids with physical disabilities and mobility impairments to develop the fundamental movement skills and confidence to become active for life. These chairs allow kids with mobility impairments to play alongside their able-bodied peers.
