  1. BELLWORK: April 15th • List four ways Germany was punished under the Treaty of Versailles. • Which countries were not allowed to participate in the Paris Peace Conference? Why? • What type of government do you think the Allied powers want established in Germany? Why? • Define totalitarianism. (page 557) • THINKER: Make a prediction  How will anger over the Treaty of Versailles lead to the rise of totalitarian governments in Europe?

The German Weimar Republic • As you know, post-WWI a provisional government is established in Germany. • What is the purpose of a provisional government? • Eventually Germany will implement a republic, or a representative-type democracy • Unfortunately, this republic becomes ineffective and 14 years after WWI it collapses. • This makes way for Hitler and his totalitarian government ….. Nazism
