Practical Steps to Manage HAV Jim Maccall
Session Plan • Health vs Safety • Vibration White Finger • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Other conditions • What do points make… • Other Controls • CDM 2015 • Summary
What is HAVS? “I know it like the back of my hand”
What do points make… • Job 1 - Risk Assess jobs being done and equipment used – Eliminate exposure • Job 2 – Control - HSE Vibration Points • Exposure Action Value – 100 Points – keep below if possible and make sure health surveillance is done • Exposure Limit Value – 400 Points – maximum a worker can be exposed to in a working day
Managing the Risk • Risk Assessing is simply done: • Look at the whole job • How many workers • What equipment is being used • Different equipment exposes the worker to different amounts of vibration • This is known as the vibration dose
Typical Vibration Values and Trigger Times Manufacturers Data - values in m/s2
Case Study - George • Vibration magnitude of CP9 at the time – 32m/s2 • Points per hour = (MxM)x2 • (32 x 32) x 2 = 2048 point per hour • Or 34 points per minute • EAV (Exposure Action Value – 100 points) in 3 minutes • ELV (Exposure Limit Value – 400 points) in 12 minutes • George was regularly getting >8,000 points per day
Measuring Trigger Time A timer linked to the power source A stop watch - operated by 2nd person • A timer activated by vibration that also monitors points e.g. The HAVi
So how does HAVi work on site? Retrofitted to any tool Vibration magnitude Colour coded Flashing Light HSE points Heavy Duty Operated remotely Trigger time
Other Controls • Train your team • Ergonomics • Equipment maintenance • Anti vibration gloves??? • Health surveillance • Planning – CDM 2015
CDM 2015 – Regulation 12 • The construction phase plan must set out the arrangements for securing health and safety during the period construction work is carried out. These arrangements include site rules and any specific measures put in place where work involves one or more of the risks listed in Schedule 3 • Work which puts workers at risk from chemical or biological substances constituting a particular danger to the safety or health of workers or involving a legal requirement for health monitoring
Conclusion • Remember HAVS has no cure but its progress can be halted • Its now easier to prevent than ever • Job risk assessment should aim to keep exposure below 100 points per person • Legal limit is 400 points in 1 shift – for emergencies! • HAVi is a simple essential piece of PPE
HAVi Training • ARange of training options including: • IOSH HAV Management Essentials – 1 day • HAV Essentials – ½ day • HAV Basics – 2 hour New 1 day courses – to be accredited • Construction Dust Management Essentials • Noise Management Essentials
