  3. The goals of the Washington State Achievement Index are to: 1. To provide a fair and consistent measurement of Washington’s public schools.2. To present a clear picture of how schools and districts are performing.3. To demonstrate improvement over time and highlight closing achievement gaps.4. To tell us more, in an easier-to-understand way, than the federal 5. "No Child Left Behind" Act’s requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress.6. Show how well low income and non-low income students perform.

Developmental Characteristics of 7th and 8th graders • Physical • Social/Emotional • Cognitive Mattson’s staff, in partnership with parents and students , is committed to ensuring an innovative and safe learning environment for all our students, while providing strong support for struggling learners.

The Forgotten Middle A study from the National Middle School Association examined academic and non-academic factors that influence post secondary success and how the factors have the greatest impact during the students’ educational development. Mattson’s staff, in partnership with parents and students , is committed to ensuring an innovative and safe learning environment for all our students, while providing strong support for struggling learners.

The Forgotten Middle • Scores in English, Math, Reading and Science show that 8th grade achievement displays a stronger relationship with college and career readiness than does any other factor, including family background, high school coursework, or high school GPA. • Similar results were found across ethnic groups and income levels. Mattson’s staff, in partnership with parents and students , is committed to ensuring an innovative and safe learning environment for all our students, while providing strong support for struggling learners.

Mattson’s Top 10 1. If you’re on school grounds...your hat is off your head. 2. Electronics are off and put away. 3. If an adult makes a request...you must comply. 4. If you’re in the hallway during class...you’re wearing a vest. 5. All bags and backpacks belong in your locker. 6. Stay within the red lines during lunch. 7. Cheering, watching, or spreading rumors that lead to a fight is FIGHT PROMOTION. DON’T PARTICIPATE! 8. Spreading rumors (by text or Facebook or in person), calling people names, pushing, or tripping others is BULLYING. DON’T PARTICIPATE! 9. Follow the dress code. Stay covered shoulder to knee. 10. BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION...NOT THE PROBLEM.

What I Learned moving from the elementary level to middle school… Five secrets of 7th grade success 1)Does it really count?  (homework) 2)  3 little words… (ask for help) 3)  Where should you be? (in class daily and on time) 4)  You will have a new best friend… (computer) 5) One word…Skyward! 6)  Be part of the solution, not the problem!

What can I do as a parent? • 8-10 hours of rest each night • Breakfast not consisting of Skittles and Monster drinks  • Review expectations PowerPoint with student • Communicate with nurse, counselor, teachers, administrators as needed • Provide structured homework time • Check Skyward often • Help with organization • Attend school functions • Know your child’s friends • Set goals and have check ins regularly
