  2. Today’s Goals • Introduce Selected Concepts of Strategic Planning • Develop Vision and Mission Statements for the Nevada Criminal Justice Information System (NCJIS) Advisory Committee

  4. Strategic Planning…What • An organized, documented method of determining what an agency or group hopes to accomplish and how it will accomplish it. • Future-oriented.

  5. Strategic Planning…Why • Management tool. • Provides direction for agency personnel. • Guides resource decisions. • Provides justification for budget requests.

  6. Strategic Planning • Answers 3 basic questions: • Where are we now? • Where do we want to be? • How do we get there?

  7. Components of a Strategic Plan -- Overview • Vision • Mission • Philosophy • (External/Internal Assessment) • Goals • Strategies • Objectives • Performance Measures

  8. The Vision Statement • Describes the “ideal” future state of the agency or organization & its impact on its customers. • What we aspire to be. • Big, global, broad.

  9. Sample Vision Statement Records Bureau To be the premier criminal history records repository in the Nation and a model that other states wish to emulate.

  10. Sample Vision Statement • Levi Strauss & Company • People love our clothes and trust our company. • We will market and distribute the most appealing and widely worn apparel brands. • Our products define quality, style and function. • We will clothe the world.

  11. The Mission Statement • The foundation of the strategic plan. • Defines the purpose of the agency and how it will work to achieve the vision. • Describes what the agency does for whom and why it’s important.

  12. Sample Mission Statements Records Bureau: To provide accurate, timely, and appropriate public safety information to the law enforcement community and the citizens of Nevada using state-of-the-art technology. Carson Tahoe Hospital: To enhance the health and well being of the communities we serve.

  13. Tool for Vision and Mission Statements The purpose of the ___________________(program or agency) is to provide/produce ___________________ (service/good) for _______________________ (whom) so that they can/in order to ____________________ (planned benefit).

  14. Practical Exercise • Complete the tool form for the NCJIS Advisory Committee. • Create Vision and Mission statements. • Compare to handouts.
