David Tennenhouse • Enthusiastic observations • something very exciting about to happen • collect all this sensor info to the ip edge • opportunity to take advantage of this data in all sorts of ways • connected to matlab, plugging things together in interesting ways • wrapping data from motes at gateway into XML • enable ways of getting real-time access to data as never before, but ... need to get it to where it is pluggable into useful tools • will drive a virtuous cycle... please wrap it in XML • SQL was thrilling – had to be done and very valuable • just the starting point, but shows what a difference it can make • neat to see the control loops appearing • DT had just about given up • huge challenges lurk there • almost all the theory assumes fixed time constant in control loop, ... • much of this simply hasn’t been tried • tremendous opportunity to rewrite the books WEBS Retreat Breakout

DT • great to see work on security • next year, should nail down what we do need • have a huge lead, so go set the benchmarks • pay attention to the gateways, within, ... what is the base level? • compare power budget, ... rather than lowest common demoninator • great opportunit • Chance to rewrite the book by going back to simpler world with better tools • another example: static checking in programming env • the programming environment work has huge potential • demonstrate in this environment and then it may strongly impact rest of the world • Challenge: What are the other chances to ‘get it right’ while things are young? • didn’t invent another DOS, ... Arati • Thanks • Everything discussed was of interest, productive, and lots of fun • Allowed me to think more about the global picture in my own applications / algorithms • Habitat monitoring really good • robo and structure monitoring gave insights into additional applications as possible • valuable to learn more about TinyOS, ex NesC and many other aspects that would like to use • would like to see more about debugging and testing • really like to produce in many parts going forward (CC1000 stack) WEBS Retreat Breakout

Springboard to see how to adapt to real world business problem • ex casino’s tracking minors, lost person in theme park • Great presentations (even if JIT) • Query processing great, also tool development • volume of routing and localization suggest concern over those aspects • important to nail these, as many others depend on them • will be increasingly to present information, not just data • wrap with XML, .... • encourage to continue to seek out case studies • ind. talks will expand view • postulates • battery life is never long enough => power mgmt, gen • each bit transmitted is loss of life => protocols • make it cheap and simple, (reliable and quick to market) WEBS Retreat Breakout
