Welcome to Cosmetology! Instructors Mrs. Hand and Mrs. Whitaker
2 Year Program • Cosmetology I • Student must earn at least 500 clock hours. • Student will learn skills such as hair cutting & styling, permanent waves, hair color applications, manicures and pedicures and more. • Cosmetology II • Student must earn the remaining 500 clock hours to complete the 1,000 hour requirement. • Student will learn skills such as advanced hair cutting & styling, chemical services, advanced hair color techniques, skin care & make-up applications, state board preparation and more.
Earning Hours • Students will be required to clock in every day on a time clock. This will be used to prove attendance and time spent in class to TDLR. • We will also utilize the time clock if there are any discrepancies with attendance. • Students will have a Module exam at the end of each 9 week period which totals 8 modules for the whole program. • Each module must be passed with a 70% or higher to earn the hours for that module. • Each module exam includes a written portion and a practical portion. The two grades will be averaged together. • Each module will have scheduled re-takes for students who are unable to pass it the first time. Students will have a total of 3 chances to pass each module.
Attendance • Attendance Is Crucial!!! Showing up is half the battle!!! • Students may not miss more than 36 days throughout the entire program per state law (TDLR)! • Students must be present to be successful in this program!
Time Clock • Students must clock in and out ever day on the computer time clock located in the lab to earn hours toward licensing and to prove attendance. • Students may NOT clock in for each other per state law. • Students may not be clocked in if they are out of dress code, eating or drinking, or are not in the building. • Time clock can and will be used to prove attendance when students are tardy, absent or not making it to and from their campus in a timely manner!!
Make Up Days / Extra Hours • Make-up days and other events are scheduled throughout the year for students to be able to reach their hours. • Students will need to take advantage of these opportunities to earn extra hours in order to be successful in cosmetology. • Extra hours days also provides the student with the opportunity to practice and gain more experience.
Cosmetology Kit Fee • Must be purchased through Burmax by Humble ISD. Contains all tools necessary for lab work.
Kit Fee • $420.00 payable by cash, money order or with credit card online. https://humbleisd.revtrak.net/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=johrgpe8 • All refunds will be charged a $20 fee. All refunds will be made by check received in the mail. No refunds after August 1st!! • A minimum $100 deposit must be paid by May 20, 2016!!! • Any remaining balance must be paid no later than August 1, 2016. • Students who have not at least made a down payment of $100.00 by May 20th, or have not paid in full by August 1st, will be dismissed from the cosmetology program.
Student Permit fee • Student Permit Fee • $25.00 payable by credit/debit card • Non-refundable • Due the first week of school • This online registration is paid to The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. • Students may not start earning credit until they have registered per state law.
State exam fees • Upon completion of the program students will be required to take the written and practical exam through The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to earn their license. • Student is responsible for scheduling and fees. • Written $52.00 • Practical $74.00 • License $53.00 Total: $179.00
Dress code • School dress code applies. No holes above the knee, no short skirts or shorts, no spaghetti straps, etc. • Lab Jacket • Student is required to wear a lab jacket with sleeves at all times in the cosmetology lab. • Closed Toed Shoes • Students are required to wear closed toed shoes at all times in the cosmetology lab. • Student should keep a pair of closed toed shoes in locker at lab.
Bag for kit • Large suitcase with wheels that can be locked. Can be any color or design. • Lock for kit • All kits must be locked when not in use! • It is the students responsibility to replace any broken or misplaced items.
Additional manikins • Kit includes 2 manikins • Additional manikins are usually needed and can be purchased at Sally’s Beauty Supply. • Discounted price with student permit.
Transportation • Bus Riders (Morning Only) • Buses transport students to and from lab from their campus in the morning ONLY. • Buses leave at 7:10 sharp!! Do not be late!!
Transportation • Student may drive • Student is responsible to arrive on time • Morning – 7:25 • Afternoon – 12:15 (Thursday – 1:20) • Students must park at the CATE center and walk to the lab. They will be required to purchase a CATE parking pass for $15.00. • Students in the afternoon class will have to have their own transportation. There are NO CATE busses running in the afternoon!
Kit Responsibilities • Student must bring kit and needed supplies EVERY DAY! • Kit must be locked when not in use! • Student is responsible for damaged or misplaced items. • Students may NOT go into other students belongings! • Includes kits, lockers, purses, etc.
Services • Students must be prepared to perform ALL services (with the exception of hair cuts) on each other at any given time. • No excuses or exceptions!! • These services may include, but are not limited to: hair styling, manicures/pedicures, facials/make-up, waxing, etc.
Clean up duties • All students will be responsible for keeping the lab clean. • Duty Chart • Towels • Dispensary • Clean up after yourself!!
Going above and beyond • All students will be required to attend extra activities throughout the year. These activities provide more practice for the students and get them used to working with clients in the community. Theses opportunities include, but are not limited to: • Late Nights • Teacher appreciation days • Festivals • Hair shows • Students will also be required to participate in cosmetology fundraisers. A minimum amount will be set for each student to meet to help cover the cost of field trips, banquet and lab supplies.
Friend day • Thursday is friend day! • We show up at 7:00 am on Late Arrival day!! • Students may perform services they have learned on each other. • This is a day for fun and practice. • Students must still be actively participating in the lab in order to be on the time clock earning hours!
Late Nights • We have a late night twice a month from 3pm to 6pm. • Students may bring in clients to practice the skills they have learned. • Late night clients may receive services at a discount. • See Friends and family price sheet attached • Late night counts for making up or getting ahead on hours. • Students who do not bring a client will be given an assignment.
Hair show • September 18th – 19th • Austin, Tx • Students will be traveling by bus with Mrs. Hand & Mrs. Whitaker. • We will arrive on Saturday and will be staying in a hotel near the convention center. We will attend the hair show on Sunday and return on Monday. • Cost of trip will be determined by May 2nd, all money will be due by May 29th.
END OF YEAR BANQUET!! • We will be having a banquet at the end of the year where students will be recognized for their accomplishments! • More information to be announced!
