An important role! The women's land army played a very important part in world war II. They helped provide Britain with food supplies at a time when many merchant ships were destroyed by rival boats. The woman in the land army did all of the jobs that were needed to make a sustainable life for themselves –maintaining a farm life to help provide all necessities needed.
The average pay given to the women over 18 was as little as £1.12 a week. The agreed maximum working hours were 50 hours in the summer and 48 hours in the winter, 5 and a ½ days a week with only Saturday afternoon and Sunday off. During harvest season many women worked dawn till dusk easily making their 50 hours a week. • During these hard times ; the women were given uniforms were more suited towards practicality rather than eye catching garments. working on a farm meant clothing needed to be comfortable and easy to wash when dirty. This meant no fashion statements.
