Instructions For Each Chapter: • Select a quotation that uses figurative language (i.e. simile, metaphor, personification, symbol, or hyperbole. • Identify the figurative language in parenthesis • Explain the meaning • Link the quotation to a theme (i.e. dehumanization, hope/optimism, loss of faith, survival/self-preservation). • Include pictures
Sample Chapter two • Quotation: “The world had become a hermetically sealed cattle car.” (metaphor) • Meaning: This metaphor shows how Jews were treated like cows and shoved into the train car. • Theme: It supports the theme of dehumanization because humans were treated like animals Jews in cattle car. Auschwitz, death camp.
Sample Chapter three • Quotation: Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever.” (personification) • Meaning: The flames from the crematoriums have extinguished Wiesel’s faith; he no longer believes in his faith • Theme: This quotation supports the theme of loss of faith.
