Bloom’s Background • Benjamin Bloom was born on February 21, 1913 in Lansford Pennsylvania. • Died on 13 September 1999.
Bloom’s Education • He received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1935 • Bloom received a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Chicago in 1942
Bloom’s Accomplishments • He became a university examiner for the University of Chicago in 1943 • He was an instructor in the Department of Education at the University of Chicago in 1944 • From1948 to 1993 he published numerous books and articles. • He published Taxonomy of Education Objectives: Handbook 1, the Cognitive Domain in 1956 • He was appointed Charles H. Swift Distinguished Service Professor in 1970
Bloom had faith in the power of the environment to influence the performance of individuals. He believed that the first four years of a child’s life were critical to promote cognitive development. Because of his convictions, he was crucial in establishing the Head Start program in the United States.
Bloom’s Theories • His theory can be summarized best with this quote by Bloom… “The purpose of education is to change the thoughts, feelings, and actions of students.”
Major Theories • Bloom’s Taxonomy • Bloom believed that there were three types of learning: • Cognitive – mental skills (knowledge) • Affective - growth in feelings or emotional areas (Attitude) • Psychomotor – manual or physical skills (skills)
Bloom’s Theory • Cognitive Domain involves knowledge and the development of intellectual skills. (ex: recognition of specific facts) • Affective Domain includes the manner in which we deal with things emotionally (ex: feelings, appreciations, etc.) • Pscyhomotor Domain involves physical movement, coordination, and use of the motor skills (ex: perception & response)
Bloom’s Taxonomy Evaluation Analysis Synthesis Knowledge Comprehension Application
Bloom’s Taxonomy Cont. • In order to get to the highest level of the cognitive taxonomy, which is evaluation, meaning the ability to evaluate, the student would need to have the necessary knowledge in all the other levels below Evaluation.

I believe Bloom’s theory is of importance, because working at Head Start, I see every day how crucial it is that any child from any background can be taught properly with effective teaching.
