StudynetIDOLSProject Drama-based training on-line videos. University Learning and Teaching Conference 3rd May 2012
The Background • Approx 850 students from Health & Human Sciences enrolled on the Interprofessional Education module. Students collaborate in mixed discipline groups and discuss material with the aim of improving the quality of patient/service user/client experience • The Humanities Acting & Screen performance students take a level 6 acting project module which gives them an opportunity to undertake a real-life work-based project which can be used as part of their assessment
Project Objectives • To promote inter professional working across the institution by providing a successful example in practice • An opportunity for Interaction and engagement between staff and students from different disciplines to enhance the students experience and broaden educational opportunities for all involved • To create realistic reusable learning objects (RLO) to increase the assessment opportunities for future cohorts of students from both disciplines • Students of Screen Acting with be provided with a real work-based opportunity to explore projects which have hitherto been hypothetical.
A collaborative solution provides opportunities • The project was a collaboration between Schools of Humanities and Health and health disciplines from the Faculty of Health & Human Sciences (H&H) • Opportunity for students of Acting and Screen Performance (ASP)a to develop drama based videos for on-line assessment. • Opportunity for H&H students to provide material content from their placements and advise ASP students on content of the drama.
Project stages • Meetings with staff students and technical officers to outline project • Call sent out to H& H students via studynet for real life case studies of miscommunication in the health professions causing damage to patients. • Collation of case studies to reveal common causes of miscommunication. • ASP students identified common causes of miscommunication poor language skills, poor recording of case histories, and age related miscommunication. • ASP student select most typical /dramatic case studies for basis of scripts • Scenarios written by student • Scenarios sent to H&H staff for checking • Scenarios cast, filmed and edited by project team led by Amy who uses the whole project for her final ASP project.
Outcomes so far. Creating the RLO’s was not the focus of the project. The significant deliverables are; Cross faculty working for students and staff Broadening the learning experience for all the students involved and making more efficient use of resources. The RLO’s as assessment resources across two faculties. Work experience for make up students at NHC.
Planned Evaluation • Student feedback • Feedback from the teaching teams • External examiners
