Bracken Howell Period .4.
Mark Frost • Born: 11/25/1953 • School: Carnegie Mellon • Other Books • The Match • The Grand Slam • Game Six Frost, Mark. The Greatest Game Ever Played. Hyperion, 2004. Print.
Protagonist • Name: Francis DeSales Ouimet • Born: May 8, 1893 • Hometown: Brookline, Massachusetts • Description: Francis Ouimet is poor kid that wishes he had enough money to pursue his dream of being a professional golfer. He was has won 19 tournaments with 3 of them being majors. He is still the only amateur to win the US Open.
Antagonist “Arthur Ouimet” • Aurthor Ouimet is a French-Canadian Catholic immigrant and Francis’s father, was very poor and depended on odd jobs to make ends meet. As a working man, he thought that golf was just a stupid game that wouldn’t lead to anything. He didn’t like it when Francis would do anything golf related, because he thought that he was throwing his life away.
Favorite Character “Eddie Lowery” • Born on October 14, 1902 • Hometown: Brookline, Massachusetts • Description: Eddie Lowery was the fifth child of John and Maria Lowery. He is best known for caddying for Francis Ouimet in the 1913 US Open. He was only 10 years old. When his older brother Jack chickened out, he skipped school for 4 days to caddy for Francis. • Eddie
Least Favorite Character “Ted Ray” • Born: March 28, 1872 Died: August 26, 1943 • Hometown: Jersey, United Kingdom • Description: Ted Ray is an arrogant, rich boy who thinks that that golf wasn’t for poor people. He only played in the US Open and the Open Championship because he thought that those were the only important ones.
Exposition • Francis grows up next to a golf course. Since he couldn’t afford any golf clubs, he traded in lost golf balls for all of his clubs. He shaped his game at local courses but wasn’t a good golfer until he started caddy at The Country Club, where he was allowed to play without a membership.
Rising Action • Francis enters the US Amateur, but loses. Then he gets invited to play in the US Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Climax • Francis wins the US Open in an 18 hole playoff with Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. He is still the only amateur to win the US Open.
Falling Action • When Francis wins, his dad who absolutely despises his son playing golf, was watching the end of the playoff and was very proud to see him win.
Resolution • Francis elevated golf as a sport to a national prominence that it had never experienced before and from which, has never died.
Time Period • The time period is between 1865 – 1913.
Place • The story takes place in England, Scotland, and Massachusetts.
Themes • Golf • Family Issues • Dad doesn’t like Francis to play golf. • No money. • Determination
Rating • I gave this book a “10” because it wasn’t boring, it was related to golf, and it’s a great “true” underdog story.
Social Issue • My social issue I chose was “Poverty”. I chose this because Francis and Harry both grew up very, very poor. They overcame great odds given their circumstances. And also, poverty is a big problem in some parts of the world.
Bibliography • Frost, Mark. The Greatest Game Ever Played. Hyperion, 2004. Print.

Poem • POVERTY • It’s the 21st century, World has advanced in many ways, yet poverty still cries.Looking at the little boy with tears in eyes, Desperately searching for love, companion and good clothesWe all know what it clearly indicates and shows, Poverty. It haunts me, and part of me wants to make a change and, the other me wants to forgetbut I can surely betIt’s something one with a good heart wouldn’t do! If it takes some sacrifice, I’m readyBut is the rest of the world? I see poverty in a rich man trying to find love, I see poverty in a well-educated man who lacks modesty.I see poverty in a literate man who lacks respect for poor.I see poverty in a selfish man who wants moreThe world is still imperfect despite all the advancements, Because there is, Poverty.
