  2. What is the Dewey Decimal System? • It is a system we use to classify books by grouping them into 10 special categories or groups. • We use the Dewey Decimal System in the Non-Fiction and Jr. Non-Fiction Areas. • This system is used in public schools (except colleges) and public libraries.

  3. What Brilliant Super-Man Came up With this System? • Mr. Melvil Dewey! • My hero… J

  4. Non-Fiction Books are Shelved in Subject Groups • For example, if you wanted a book about cars, you would want them to be in the same area. You wouldn’t worry about the author, you would just want the facts about cars. Think About IT! If they weren’t shelved this way, libraries would be in total chaos!

  5. What are the 10 Groups? • 000’s = General Works The numbers up to 100 are used for books such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, books about books, and other reference books.

  6. Dewey Decimal Groups Continued • 100’s “Who am I?” • 200’s “Who made me?” • 300’s “Who are those other people over there?” • 400’s “How can we talk to each other?”

  7. Dewey Decimal Groups Continued • 500’s “How can I understand nature and the world around me?” • 600’s “How can I use what I know about nature?” • 700’s “How can I enjoy my free time?”

  8. Dewey Decimal Groups Continued • 800’s “How can I give others a record of this heroic deed, or story?” • 900’s “How can I leave a record for people of the future so they can learn from our mistakes?”

  10. What is a call number? It is a group of numbers and/or letters put together to tell you where in the library to find your book Hi, I have a call number Call # for Reference Book Note: 000’s 001.9 Ma

  11. E Ma What does a Fiction call number look like? There are many ways to write a fiction call number. FMa F = Fiction Ma=First two letters of author’s last name Ma E = Everybody

  12. What does a Non-Fiction call number look like? 001.9 A Dewey call number always has three numbers to the left of the decimal. 001.9Ma Dewey Number Author’s Last Name
