Presentation Outline • Introduction & Background • Logistics • Design • Analysis • Wrap-up Jason Harris
Sponsored by the Institute for Affordable Transportation (IAT) • Performance requirements • Cost requirements • National competition in Indianapolis May 26th Jason Harris
Requirements • The top speed should be 25 mph • Carry a four-person load or 770 lbs • Minimum range of 120 miles • Production version should cost less than $1200 to produce (modified design) Jason Harris
Design and build a working prototype of a BUV • Provide a full engineering report • Provide CAD drawings and digital video clips of the vehicle to the public • Complete a financial analysis • A web page that includes all of the above for judging Jason Harris
Focus on the end user • Enhance the quality of life for the operator • Components should be made from generic steel stock so that the operator can repair it without a parts store. • The vehicle should also be made so that other manufacturers can copy it. • The goal of this project is to help developing countries. Jason Harris
W. L. Gore donated steel • Facility Services donated a vehicle • Daihatsu • C&D Mold, Steel donated • Big thanks to Don McCallum Jason Molina
1981 Daihatsu Hijet Engine: 547 cc, 2 cylinder gasoline Wheelbase: 70.75 inches Bed: 72 inches Close match to original design Jason Molina
Where we started Greg Gonzales
What we added Greg Gonzales
Volume assumption of 100,000 units annually • Based on the Daihatsu Chassis and our modification kit • Tooling Cost approximately 2.25m • Produced in Africa (close to test market Ghana) • Purchase Steel from Brazil (low cost) • Cost per unit<$1200 Greg Gonzales
Dean’s Spot hehe ;) • Vehicle will tip fully loaded at 290 Greg Gonzales
FEA model: Type: Frame undergoing a large negative acceleration (such as a collision or a fast stop); Static nodal stress. Load: 300 lbs on roof rack Material: 1.5 inch box steel (assumed mild steel 1020), same as the frame material. Yield strength is 294.8 MPa Ben Breazeale
Case 1: • Frame joint • Result: Stress of 350 MPa • Factor of safety <1 Ben Breazeale
Case 2: • Frame with gusset plate • Result: stress of 180 MPa • Factor of safety 1.64 Ben Breazeale
Gusset close-up 300 lb load • Moves stress concentration away from the weld Ben Breazeale
The Dean’s Car…DOH!! Ben Breazeale
Finish Web page by May 4th • Compete in the national design competition in May via website • Submit design to IAT May 26 Ben Breazeale
