  11. Ideas That Have Helped Me…

  12. Avoid Being “Mystified” By Technology and Terminology • Eventually, the technology and terms will matter… • But firstthink in terms of what classroom activities are best done in the digital environment • Then look for the technology that will allow you to do that

  13. Avoid Being “Mystified” By Technology and Terminology • The categories we use to describe courses – “online”, “distance”, “offline”, “hybrid” – are bureaucratic conventions • Start with assignments first, then worry about the percentage online or offline later

  14. Know Why You Would Teach a Hybrid • To build community outside of the classroom? • Do you want your students to work together on a team project outside of class? • It may be easier to build community through hybrid classes

  15. Know Why You Would Teach a Hybrid • To increase access to instruction? • Does your class often have a sizeable proportion of professionals? • Is your class a “bottleneck” class in that many students must wait to take it before progressing? • More students can be accommodated in hybrid classes with only marginally more effort

  16. Know Why You Would Teach a Hybrid • To break down status barriers? • Does your class routinely discusses sensitive issues such as race, homosexuality, sexuality, etc? • Does your class have a goal of diversity, and you want students from different backgrounds to communicate?

  17. Know Why You Would Teach a Hybrid • To manipulate (store, reproduce, disseminate) information? • Do you deal with a lot of images or readings? • Do you wish to give frequent, small assessments/informal writing assignments?
