  3. Kennings • Compound (more than one word) metaphors • Two word descriptions that substitute for a noun. • Create striking, unexpected comparisons

  4. 3 Kinds of Kennings in Beowulf • Compound Words (often hyphenated) the bent-kneckedwood =ship • Prepositional Phrases (often with “of”) the storm of swords = battle • Possessives (look for apostrophes) Geats’ proud prince = Beowulf

  5. Why use a Kenning? • Provide powerful imagery that help the audience focus on the world created by the scop(storyteller). • Allows the scop some variety, so words don’t become overused • Provide additional alliteration(repetition of initial consonant sounds in neighboring words)

  6. Kennings and the Modern Age • Used today in speaking, writing, and even in everyday conversation. A person who reads a lot – bookworm The wife of the President – first lady An impolite name for an ex-convict – jailbird
