3 Kinds of Kennings in Beowulf • Compound Words (often hyphenated) the bent-kneckedwood =ship • Prepositional Phrases (often with “of”) the storm of swords = battle • Possessives (look for apostrophes) Geats’ proud prince = Beowulf
Why use a Kenning? • Provide powerful imagery that help the audience focus on the world created by the scop(storyteller). • Allows the scop some variety, so words don’t become overused • Provide additional alliteration(repetition of initial consonant sounds in neighboring words)
