  5. Principles of Teaching Games Approach Practices are as closely aligned with game conditions as possible (and prudent) • Shaping play • Focusing play • Enhancing play Makes practices more athlete-centered than coach-centered

  6. Games Approach Shaping Play • Change rules to create desired learning • Alter number of players, size of field, time allowed, etc. to increase the learning opportunities. • Modify scoring, offense/defense numbers Redesign game so athletes practice what is relevant in real game scenarios

  7. Games Approach Focusing Play • Focus attention on the key element of the game • Explain the purpose of game, label key elements, remind players during game • Freeze / Replay Helps athletes learn not only the skill but also the proper time and place for it

  8. Games Approach Enhancing Play • Present challenges • Handicap players/situations to close contests • Create competition* and all the teachable moments that come with it Practice becomes more enjoyable and valuable

  9. Teaching a Technical Skill Three Stages of Learning • Mental • Practice • Automatic

  10. Teaching a Technical Skill 4 Steps of Teaching a Technical Skill • Introduce the skill • Demonstrate and explain • Allow for the athletes to practice • Correct errors

  11. Teaching a Technical Skill Technical Skill Practice • Practice the technique correctly • Practice in gamelike condition asap • Keep practice of new techniques short • Be efficient in use of time • Optimal use of facility and equipment • Ensure athletes receive some success at each practice • Make practice fun

  12. Teaching a Technical Skill Providing Feedback • Try to remain positive (5 to 1 ratio) Extreme should be private • Provide in timely manner (as possible) • Correct—ask—correct—ask—correct • One error at a time—cause/effect; sequence; major to minor

  13. Teaching a Technical Skill Providing Feedback (cont.) • Use experienced athletes (leaders) • Important for athlete to understand error before correction (demo?) • Simple, specific and precise • Control Frustration (body language, tone of voice, word choice, etc)

  14. Planning for Teaching Effective Practice Planning • Identify the skills your athletes need • Know your athletes • Analyze your situation • Establish Priorities • Select the methods for teaching • Plan Practices
