  1. Welcome to Mr. Liberti’s 4th Grade Class Thank you for joining us tonight. Please come in and look around. Your child left you a note, if you would like to reply that would be great. I will be covering a lot of information that will hopefully be helpful and useful to you.

  2. Student Expectations Students are expected to follow all class & school rules at all times. This is for the safety and success of all students. Here are the rules the class came up with during our first week. • Respect yourself and others • CHOMP • Complete all class, and homework assignments daily.

  3. CHOMP • C- cooperate with others • H- be honest and set a good example • O- be on task and always do our best • M- be mindful and treat others with respect • P- come to school prepared to learn Classes earn CHOMPliments from teachers in the hallways, at specials and various other times of the day. As classes reach levels of 50 they are given a reward for their hard work.

  4. Student Behavior If students do not follow the 3 school rules or our class rules the following actions will take place: • Note in agenda/Verbal warning • Note in agenda/discussion with student and possibly walk the thinking trail • Phone call home/possible conference

Standards Based Grading LEVELDESCRIPTOR • 4 - Exemplary Student consistently demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the standards, concepts and skills taught during this reporting period. • 3 - Proficient Student consistently demonstrates an understanding of the standards, concepts and skills taught during this reporting period. • 2 – Approaching Proficiency Student is approaching an understanding of the standards, concepts and skills taught during this reporting period. • 1 – Non-Proficiency Student does not yet demonstrate an understanding of standards, concepts and skills taught during this reporting period. • Wake County Public Schools

Daily Schedule • Our specials are on a 7 day rotation. • Each special will not be on the same day each week. • I will send home the specials for the following week every Friday in the newsletter and it will be posted on the board in class weekly. • Please be sure your child wears sneakers on their PE day • We will be changing rooms this school year so our lunch times and rooms may change when we track in. The new lunch times, schedules and dates are on my website. I will also let you know in the newsletter.

  8. The Daily Café • A new research based literacy framework based on The Daily Five and The Café.

  9. What is The Café? • CAFÉ is an acronym that stands for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding vocabulary. The system includes goal-setting with students in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs and fine tuning one on one conferring.

What sets the Daily Café apart? • For Teachers….. • Deliver 3-5 whole group lessons each day • Teach 3-4 small groups of children each day • Confer with 9-12 individual students each day • Hold all students accountable for eyes-on-text • For Students….. • Engaged in the act of reading and writing for extended amounts of time • Receive focused instruction on building and maintaining independence • Receive tailored instruction through whole group, small group, and/or individual conferring, by their skilled classroom teacher, each day

  11. Spelling Contracts/Activities • I use Words Their Way for spelling. Next week I will be administering a diagnostic test to help me determine where they are with their spelling. Everyone will be put into a group. • Each week, students will be given words to sort. At the top of their paper are the categories for them to sort them into. Homework for the week: SpellingCity.com any night • Monday: Choose 12 words and define the word • Tuesday: Write each word and complete spelling fractions • Wednesday: Choose 12 words and write them in a complete sentence • Thursday: Write each word and classify each as a noun, pronoun, verb, adverb or adjective • Friday: take the test at school on spellingcity.com and print the results We will start the activities after track out

  12. Empowering Writers Taking a more critical approach to writing development

What is Empowering Writers ? *A scaffolded approach that teaches the “HOW” to become a good writer by developing modeled lessons that create a strong foundation for students. *Encourages students to think more critically about what they write as well as what they read by asking questions throughout the writing process. *Integrates all genres in each themed unit, which supports the Common Core and allows students to see one idea (themed unit) can be the center for several writing pieces (expository, narrative, and opinion writing).

What will writing look like in the classroom? *Students will be provided exemplary examples of writing to guide them. *The teacher will spend a significant amount of time during each lesson modeling. *The teacher will support and challenge students during writing time, by walking around and sharing outstanding examples out loud to encourage other students to think differently.

  15. Our Goals… • Increase our students’ writing confidence • Build a stronger foundation for student writing skills • Increase teacher confidence in the “HOW TO” teach writing • Integrate all genres of writing throughout the year

Homework Policy I believe that homework is necessary for practicing skills that have been learned or for enriching the classroom experience. • Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday • Some assignments will require more than one night’s completion time. • Students have the responsibility for their own homework. • Our school implements the Wake County Public School System homework policy. Please refer to the student/parent handbook or www.wcpss.net for the complete policy.

  17. Projects We will be working on projects throughout the year. I will be sending home all of the information as they come up. Q1-Habitats/Science Q2-Government Q3-SS/Writing Q4-EOY research project

  18. Field Trips • NC Zoo: October 10 • NC Symphony: date pending • Mordecai House: date pending (Spring) • Please fill out the volunteer registration online in the library. You must fill this out every year in order to volunteer, this includes field trips as well.

  19. Friday Folders • Friday Folders go home weekly • Please look over the work that your child has done throughout the week, as well as any other important papers from school. • I send a newsletter each Friday and the students will write a letter about their week in their family journals. These are to be signed and returned on Monday.

  20. Agendas • Students write their homework and important information down each night in their agenda. • I will sign them each day and ask that you please initial them each night. • This year the agendas are free thanks to our wonderful PTA 

  21. SCES STUDENT COUNCIL 2014-2015 • Calling 3rd-5th grade students interested in school leadership! • Advisors: Ms. McHenry (5th – Track 1) and Kyle Edmister (5th – Track 4) • Main purposes: • Teach leadership/team-building skills • Complete service projects within school and communitiy • Election process: • Applications will be sent home Friday, July 25 with interested students. • Election dates outlined on the application – different based on track • No campaigning – want the election to be fair for all students! • 2 minute speeches can be creative, but no props or videos are allowed. • Each class will vote on one council member – majority rules • We will elect officers in October, after council members have been elected. • Monthly meetings listed on application • If your child chooses to run for Student Council, please help them understand that only one student is chosen per class! • Extra copy of application will be available on Ms. McHenry’s website: www.missmchenry.wordpress.com • Thanks for your support of SCES Student Council! 

  22. Conferences • Conferences are held 1st and 3rd quarters. • If you would like a conference you may request one at any time. • When it is time for conferences I will send home times and ask that you please let me know if it works with your schedule. • Phone conferences are also available, however you cannot see your child’s progress and work samples if you don’t come in person.
