  1. Single-Cell Organisms Protists and Viruses

  2. Protists • Found in the Kingdom Protista • Live in moist environments • 1 or many celled organism. • Are Eukaryotic (have a nucleus)

  3. Types of Protists 1.Protozoans - Animal Like Protist • Many protozoans use a: • Flagella (whip like tail), • Cilia (short hair like structures) or • Pseudopods (extension of cytoplasm) for movement 2, Molds- Fungus Like • do not move 3. Algae- Plant Like Protists • contain chlorophyll, attached root like structures

  4. Euglena • Moves by a Flagella (tail) • Can make its own food by photosynthesis or can eat other organisms • Primary producer for aquatic ecosystem. • Found in freshwater; ponds, streams

  5. Paramecium • Moves by Cilia (tiny hairs) • Uses cilia to guide food into its oral groove that acts like a mouth • Commonly known as the “slipper” • They are found in fresh water • They feed on bacteria and algae Click on picture for video

  6. Amoeba • Move by a pseudopod (false foot) • Obtains food through phagocytosis (process where the cell captures its food) • Traps food using the pseudopod • Live in fresh and salt water environments Click on picture for video

  7. Viruses -What are they? Click on picture for video

  8. Structure of Viruses • Smaller than bacteria • Head that contains the DNA • Tail fibers are used to attach the virus to the cell • Tail inserts the DNA into the cell

  9. Are Viruses Considered Alive? • Viruses are not considered living organisms • Viruses cannot grow, or respond to changes in the environment • Viruses can only reproduce ONCE they have infected host cell

  10. Where is Bacteria Found? • Found in the Kingdom Monera

  11. Types of Bacteria (classified by shape) • Sprillum (Spiral-shape) • Baccillus (Rod-shape)

  12. Types of Bacteria • Coccus (Round –shape)

  13. No nucleus DNA is found in the cytoplasm Cell Membrane Cell Wall Some have a capsule What cell parts are found in bacteria?

  14. The Good and The Bad Bacteria The Bad The Good • Helps digest your food • Breaks down dead matter • Can make you sick • Make food spoil
