The Palestine Question • The issue of ‘Holy Land’ • Christianity, Judaism, Islam all anchored in Palestine region • Jerusalem • Jewish immigration to Palestine limited during 1930s • Jews wanted access to “holy land” • Muslim dominated region • Horrors of the Holocaust shock people • 6 million dead • Sympathy for Jews

Partitioning of Palestine • Zionists push for establishment of Israel • 1947: United Nations partitions, or divides, Palestine into two separate nations • Arab State & Jewish State • 1948: Jews establish the country of Israel • Many Arabs feel betrayed • Refuse to recognize Israel as a country • Warfare

  5. The Suez Crisis • Importance of Suez Canal • Links Mediterranean Sea with Red Sea • 1956: Egypt seizes control of canal from French & British • War ensues; Israel declares war on Egypt with G.B. & France • US & USSR convince the 3 to allow Egyptian control of the canal

  6. Pan-Arabism • Gamal Abdel Nasser emergeces from conflict as major Arab leader • Promotes Arab unity in the Middle East • Pan-arabism • Control of oil • Wealth! • OPEC • Continued hostilities with Israel

  7. Israel strikes back • Under threat of invasion, Israel attacks Egypt in 1967 • Israel occupies more territory: • Sinai Peninsula • West Bank • Golan Heights • Millions of Muslims now under Israeli control • Conflict continues to this day
