  2. Definition of Literacy literacy nounlit·er·a·cy \ˈli-t(ə-)rə-sē\ : the ability to read and write : the quality or state of being literate

  3. There are still 757 million adults including 115 million youths in the world who cannot read or write a simple sentence. Roughly two-thirds of them are female.

  4. The lowest national literacy rates are observed in sub-Saharan Africa and in South and West Asia.

  5. Adult literacy rates were below 50% in the following countries: • Afghanistan • Benin • Burkina Faso • Central African Republic • Chad • Côte d'Ivoire • Ethiopia • Guinea • Haiti • Liberia • Mali • Mauritania • Niger • Senegal • Sierra Leone • South Sudan
