Why Urban Communities? • Address Two Major Issues: • increasingly urbanized population • shortage of time • Focus on • lakes you can ride a bike to • lakes with good shore or pier fishing
Outputs and Outcomes • Outputs • Test various stocking strategies • Market selected opportunities • Assessment – identify types of fishing opportunities required to increase participation • Outcomes • Increase in angling effort • Increase in new, lapsed & occasional anglers • 30% increase in licence sales
Pilot Lakes • Location • Current stocking • Current fishing effort • Existing facilities (shore or pier fishing) • Current marketing • Interest of municipal partners
Test Stocking Strategies • Ensure the fish product is available • Identified pilot lakes for additional stocking • FVTH & VITH producing additional fish • Increase total numbers stocked and frequency of releases • Alternative stocking experiment • NEXT STEP – develop stocking release plan for 2008
Test Stocking Strategies- Lafarge Lake Experiment - • Transferred approximately 350 Blackwater RB from Frisken Lk to Lafarge Lk • Press release picked up by 2 local papers (Coquitlam NOW & Tri-City News) • Test effectiveness of: • providing additional fish • moving fish from a winterkill lake
Test Stocking Strategies- Lafarge Lake Experiment - • Angler survey October 9 - 28 • Encouraged by angling participation • 19 anglers on lake first weekend post-press • Final catch and survey statistics still being analyzed • Anglers not traveling far • Anglers aware of stocking program • Local media is effective • Licence compliance was high • Stay tuned for results of analysis
Market Opportunities • Marketing plan for 2008 • Targeted media campaign • Co-ordinate with L2F • Signs – information and ethics • Website – pilot lakes + • NEXT STEPS – fit community fisheries marketing into broader provincial marketing plan
Assessment • Assessment plan for 2008 • effort & angler survey • Identify “best bang for buck” • Final report for 2009 • Recommendations • Broader Implementation Plan
