Why am I here today? • You recently attended a Career Center Seminar (CCS) and are an Unemployment Insurance (UI) claimant. • The US Department of Labor (USDOL) and the MA Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) has mandated Career Centers to provide follow-up services to UI Claimants 2
Why am I here today? • This RES Review will: • Help you conduct an effective job search • Agenda: • Individual Needs Assessment (INA) • Hot Jobs / Job Quest • Work Search logs • The role of Employment Specialists in assisting you • Services and workshops available to you • Obtaining Labor Market Information (LMI) • And more! 3
Acronyms • You will hear some of these terms discussed: • UI = Unemployment Insurance • DUA = Department of Unemployment Assistance • DCS = Department of Career Services • CC = Career Center • CCS = Career Center Seminar • VWCC = ValleyWorks Career Center • RES = Re-employment Services • ES / JS = Employment / Job Specialist • INA = Individual Needs Assessment • NEG = National Emergency Grant 4
Individual Needs Assessment During the CCS, you were provided a form called an Individual Needs Assessment (INA) This form was designed to assist you in determining what services or assistance you may need and help you make decisions about your job search. 6

Individual Needs Assessment • Did everyone complete their INA? • Community Resources • Please advise us if you need any contact information after this meeting • Note: we cannot determine your eligibility for these services • Specialized Services – Veterans, Youth (18-21), TRADE, NEG • We have staff available to assist you with these services • Eligibility requirements apply for most specialized services 8
Individual Needs Assessment • Did everyone complete their INA? • Job Search • Workshops are an important component of your job search! • A workshop calendar was included in your CCS folder • Workshop topics: • Resume Writing (critical to your job search!!) • Computer based (self-paced or facilitator led) • Job Enhancement (Interviewing, Salary Negotiations) • Special Events (Social Media, Networking) • Note: To sign up for a workshop check the appropriate item and we will schedule it at the end of this meeting 9
Individual Needs Assessment • Did everyone complete their INA? • Upgrading Skills • If you lack marketable skills / certifications, attend “Overview to Training” to see if you are eligible for training • Please note: training must be needed to make you marketable • After attending “Overview to Training”, if you feel this is the right choice for you, your first step will be to meet with an Employment Specialist • If you believe you are TRADE or NEG Eligible, let us know after this meeting. 10
Individual Needs Assessment • Did everyone complete their INA? • Upgrading Skills (Section 30) • You must obtain approval from DUA to attend full-time training • Signed by you and the training vendor / college / university and faxed or mailed to Boston • Waives your work search requirements (if approved) • Part-time training (less than 20 class hours or 12 semester credits) – Section 30 not required (work search not waived) – but please inform UI if you are enrolled • DOES NOT pay for training • Section 30 form will be discussed in detail during Overview to Training • More information: www.mass.gov/dua “Section 30” on left menu 11
Work Search Logs • Work Search Logs are required by DUA • While collecting UI benefits, you are required • to: • Be Able and Available to work • Be Actively searching • Conduct a minimum of three job search activities per week • Work Search Logs can be audited by DUA 13
Work Search Logs • What constitutes Work Search Activity? • Contact with employers (i.e. sending a resume, online application, in • person or phone contact) • Using online job postings • Reviewing professional journals / want ads / newspaper listings • Contacting Staffing / Placement Agencies • Employment counseling (this Review is a Work Search Activity!) • Networking • Meeting with an Employment Specialist in our Resource Room • Workshop participation • Union workers: contacting your Union Hall / Business Agent (IF this is • the only method of work search allowed for your occupation) 15
