1. Pick up :①to get a skill,language by chance rather than by deliberately trying to get it( 偶然,无意间)学会技能,语言 • Eg:“Where did you study Greek?”“I didn’t ,I just picked it up when I lived there.” • “你在哪里学的希腊语?”“我没学,我只是在希腊生活时无意中学了一点。”
If you sing it several times your children will begin to pick up the words. • 如果你把它唱上几遍,你的孩子就会不知不觉的学会歌词。 • ②to get a habit,idea or piece of information by chance rather than by deliberately trying to get it 染上(习惯),想到(主意),得到(信息)
2. a working knowledge “实用知识”。working表示“起作用的”, “有效力的。” • Have a working knowledge of:to have enough knowledge of a system foreign language etc. to be able to use it, although your knowledge is limited • (对某系统,外语等)有足够的知识的 • eg : Gita has a working knowledge of Spanish and French. • 吉塔的西班牙语和法语还过的去。
3.persuade sb to do sth: • I finally managed to persuade her to go out for a drink with me. • 我最后终于想法子说服她跟我出去喝一杯。 • persuade sb into doing sth: • Don’t let yourself be persuaded into buying things you don’t really want. • 不要让别人说服你去买那些你并不需要的东西。 • persuade sb that: • Carla failed to persuade us that she was innocent. • 卡拉没能使我们相信她是无辜的。
4. let alone :used to say that because one thing does not happen or is not true etc. another thing can’t possibly happen or be true 更不用说更谈不上 • eg: The baby can’t even crawl yet, let alone walk! • 这小孩连爬都不会,更不用说走了。
5. far from:used to say that the opposite of sth is true,or the opposite of what you expect happens 远远不,一点也不 • far from being: • Far from being a reactionary his actually quite liberal in his views. • 他根本不是反动分子,实际上他的观点相当开朗。 • far from doing sth: • Far from helping the situation,you’ve just made it worse. • 你非但对情况没什么帮助,反而弄得更糟。
6. come across:to meet,find,or discover someone or something by accident or by chance 偶遇,偶然发现 • eg:He had never come across a person quite like Sheila. • 我从没遇到过像希拉这样的人。 • 我在房间里偶然翻到了一些老照片。 • I came across some old photos in the room..
7. heard of: to know that someone or sth exists because you have been told about them 知道,听说过 • eg: I have never heard of him! • 我从未听说过他. • Compare: • hear from: to receive news from someone, usually by letter (通常指通过信件)得到(某人)的消息 • eg: Have you heard from Sarah lately? • 你最近收到过萨拉的信吗?
8. amazement: a feeling of great surprise 吃惊,惊奇 • .to one’s amazement: to one’s surprise • eg: To my amazement, she came up and shook my hand. • 令我吃惊的是他竟然走过来和我握手。 • 扩展词: • amaze v. to make someone very surprised 使大为惊奇,使惊愕 • amazed: adj. extremely surprised. 感到惊奇, 觉得惊讶
9.used to do: 过去常常做某事,否定式为“used not to do或 usedn’t to do 在口语中也可以用didn’t use to do • be used to sth: • Lady Whitton wasn’t used to people disagreeing with her. • 惠顿夫人不习惯别人跟她意见相左. • be used to doing sth: • I have always been used to working hard. • 我始终习惯于做艰苦的工作.
10. in sb’s company /in the company of sb: with someone 与某人在一起 • eg: I couldn’t help feeling uneasy in the company of such an important man. • 和这么重要的人物在一起我不由自主的感到不自在.
11.put on:to pretend to have a certain feeling,opinion,way of speaking etc. especially in order to get attention 假装有…. 装出…. • eg: He always puts on that posh voice when he is on the phone. • 他打电话时总是装出那副上流社会的腔调。
