Endangered Forest Protections For any tier of certification 95% of fiber must be • Recycled Fiber, or • Agricultural or alternative fiber*, or • Fiber in an FSC certified paper, or • Fiber that meets the FSC controlled wood standard Publishers may be provisionally certified with 85% of fiber meeting these criteria in the first year *Agricultural or alternative fiber will only count towards the endangered forest requirements if there is a lifecycle analysis suggesting that the lifecycle impacts are less than those of a similar paper grade produced from virgin tree fiber
Options and Benchmarks • There are four ways to achieve each tier of certification • For each option there are minimum requirements for: • Recycled Fiber • FSC Certified Fiber • Elective Benchmark Points • Endangered forest requirements must be met for all tiers and all options
Elective Benchmarks • Elective benchmarks are awarded for a variety of environmental achievements: • Additional Recycled Fiber • Low returns rate • Energy efficiency and GHG reductions • Many more options
