THEMIS and ARTEMIS Education and Public Outreach Laura Peticolas UC Berkeley
Goals • Nationally, middle and high school science teachers use THEMIS and ARTEMIS as a ‘hook’ to provide context to magnetism and space science • Middle and high school science teachers understand the ‘story’ of the Sun’s influence on Earth’s and the Moon’s magnetic fields. • Students of the above teachers are inspired to continue towards a science, technology, engineering, or math career. • Amateur astronomers are inspired to follow the science of THEMIS and ARTEMIS and share it with the public.
Programs to meet the goals • Develop a Heliophysics Educator Ambassador program with other NASA education and public outreach programs that support teachers from over 12 states • Work with the Astronomical Society of the Pacific’s Night Sky Network of amateur astronomers as well as NASA amateur astronomer networks and THEMIS/ARTEMIS scientists to provide lectures and hand-outs to the amateur astronomers.
Heliophysics Educator Ambassador (HEA) Program • Train two sets of HEA teachers (2009 and 2010) to be teacher leaders and train other teachers on Heliophysics science and mission discoveries (~40 HEA teachers total). • Financially support the teachers to lead workshops in their states (x15 per HEA teacher each year). • THEMIS, ARTEMIS, AIM, TIMED, IBEX, STEREO, and RHESSI are all part of this effort.
