  1. How Do Fluid Flow Sensors Work Many industries deal with liquids, including medical, dairy, oil and gas, food and beverage, and more. To achieve success, companies within these industries depend on a host of machinery, equipment, devices, and tools. In particular, they need to know levels or amounts of liquid as part of normal operations. To obtain accurate information, they depend on a fluid flow sensor. A flow detection sensor makes it possible to determine if a tank or some other type of vessel is starting to run low. At the same time, this device prevents fluid overflow. Depending on what customers need to track, they can choose a device that simply reveals a full or empty status or go with a more robust device that continuously measures fluid. Even vehicles that people drive have a non-invasive sensor associated with the gas tank. The device sends signals, which is how drivers know if their tank is full or getting low on fuel. The same concept applies to the various industries that handle liquids, just on a different scale. 2. What Is a Flow Detection Sensor? This sensor measures the flow of fluid, whether it’s a liquid or gas. With both electrical and mechanical components, the device detects and measures any changes in a fluid’s attributes. It also calculates how a fluid flows. Since the various types of fluids behave differently, each requires a specific method of measurement, and thereby, a different fluid flow sensor. For instance, one non-invasive sensor measures differential pressure, while another works with thermal mass. •Differential Pressure - A sensor measures pressure at two varying velocities. However, this doesn’t disrupt the fluid density. By determining the pressure difference, companies can then find the velocity of a particular fluid. That’s used to determine the overall flow. •Thermal Mass – This non-invasive sensor is specifically designed for low-flow, high-accuracy, and gaseous applications. To measure the flow through a system, the sensor uses a fluid’s thermal properties. For this, companies can use one of two configurations. Regardless, they both depend on a fluid’s capability of absorbing thermal energy. Multiple Fluid Flow Sensor Technologies Considering how critical it is to stay on top of liquid levels, there are now multiple technologies for this kind of sensor. While some are relatively basic, others are quite advanced. As a perfect example, one flow detection sensor uses seven technologies to accommodate the various switches, sensors, and transmitters.
