To retrieve co-authors data Author submitting a manuscript enters a co-author ORCID and clicks "find person" Retrieve public data from an ORCID account to prepopulate co-author information in manuscript submission The ORCID is not permanently linked to the account, as the individual has not authenticated

Multiple journals, multiple accounts • We are asking users to authenticate to ORCID • Maintain quality • Co-author ORCID not associated with account • We are not allowing an ORCID to be attached to more than one account in the same journal • We are only allowing users to attach one ORCID to an account • ORCID processes will allow multiple to be created - how will these be merged and our data updated? • We are asking the users to authenticate to ORCID once and will share that id across multiple journals.
Upon publication: future plans • ORCID attached to author affiliation in the article • ORCID-doi pairs registered with CrossRef for disambiguation and update of ORCID data Add ORCID
Beyond disambiguation, authors and readers benefits ORCID and publishers development
Current technical limitations • Lack ability to create an ORCID programmatically • Because the token is a one-time user, there is no facility for us to allow the user to “synchronize” their accounts (i.e. update their details with us from ORCID) • Mock service has been hard to work with. We expect this will be resolved with the release of version 1.0
Risks • Taking users to and from ORCID – Publishers are dependent on elements of ORCID website and service that are different, remain unclear: or are subject to change: • Different Terms and Privacy agreements. • Benefit messaging on ORCID? • ORCID clarity of public data use by third party? • Complexity/effort of registration process on ORCID?
