Background Information The UK is experiencing a housing crisis. The Government estimates we need an extra 223,000 houses per year to meet the rising demand. By 2016 the Government wants to see 240,000 new homes built every year. That means an extra 3 million homes before 2020.....but where should they go?
Gathering Information Watch this clip carefully and make notes on the reasons for housing shortages in Cambridge. History: after WW2 a rush of houses were built on the edge of cities leading to ‘urban sprawl’. Today the green spaces around the edge of our cities are known as ‘green belt or greenfield sites’ and are protected from building. Currently 13% of land in the UK is greenfield. Brownfield Sites – are sites that have already been built on and are derelict .
Other alternatives Write a definition of BROWN FIELD and GREENFIELD sites. Giving people an incentive or cash payment to move out of houses that are too big for them, so other larger families can take their place. Watch this clip and make notes on how incentives helped the families find the right home.
Reasons for the Housing Demand Using page 37 WJEC textbook – make a spider diagram of all the reasons why housing demands are high in the Southeast of England.
Plenary: Reviewing the Learning Give two reasons for the rise in demand for housing in the UK. Give one reason why brown field sites are more SUSTAINABLE that green field sites. Explain one way the council in Leeds is trying to get people better matched to their homes.
