1.Definition Lipids (Fats) are organic substances which are water insoluble but soluble in fat solvents (Polar solvents). These polar solvents include Alcohols, chloroform, ethers, Benzene, acetone…etc
2.Function of lipids • Lipids supply the body with energy. 1 gm fat gives 9.3 Kcal. • Make the food palatable. • Laxative • Keep the body contour. • Fixation of internal organs. • Enter in the structure of cell membrane.
3.Classifiation of lipids • Simple lipids: (Neutral fat and wax) • Compound (complex) lipids: (simple lipids and other substances) • Derived lipids: from hydrolysis of simple and compound lipids • Substances associated with lipids:
