Introduction to Lipid Metabolism: Functions and Classification

Learn about lipids, their functions, and classification in the human body. Explore the digestion and absorption processes of lipids, as well as the hormonal regulation involved. Lipids provide energy, contribute to cell structure, and play vital roles in body contour and organ fixation.

  2. Introduction to lipid metabolism 1.Definition. 2. Function of lipids. 3. Classification of lipids. 4. Digestion of lipids. 5. Absorption of lipids.

  3. 1.Definition Lipids (Fats) are organic substances which are water insoluble but soluble in fat solvents (Polar solvents). These polar solvents include Alcohols, chloroform, ethers, Benzene, acetone…etc

  4. 2.Function of lipids • Lipids supply the body with energy. 1 gm fat gives 9.3 Kcal. • Make the food palatable. • Laxative • Keep the body contour. • Fixation of internal organs. • Enter in the structure of cell membrane.

  5. 3.Classifiation of lipids • Simple lipids: (Neutral fat and wax) • Compound (complex) lipids: (simple lipids and other substances) • Derived lipids: from hydrolysis of simple and compound lipids • Substances associated with lipids:

  6. Digestion & Absorption

  7. 4.Digestion of lipids

  8. Hormonal regulation of lipid digestion
